The reserve defensive back had become more involved in the return game. Now his future with the team is in doubt.
According to Mary Cay Kabot on Twitter, “DB Gerard Lawson pleaded not guilty to DUI, released from jail this morning.”
The Browns were hoping to have a quiet Training Camp in 2010 after an off-season saw a renewed hope in the organization. Instead of celebrating Family Day at Cleveland Browns Stadium this weekend, the team awoke to answer questions on the arrest of one of its players.
Gerard Lawson, 25 years old and vying for a integral role on the teams' return units, was arrested Saturday night, charged with driving under the influence.
The arrest came after an 11 p.m. curfew for the losing side of an earlier scrimmage, was won by the "Brown" team, 14-6. Lawson was on the losing side, but decided to blow of his curfew and head out to Cleveland's Warehouse District. Lawson was pulled over in the area after police officers observed him hit a parked car with his vehicle and continue driving.
The Browns released a statement, saying they were "continuing to gather information" and would withhold any further comment at this time.
