Gator Bowl 2012: A Look At Ohio State's Offense Under Urban Meyer

As the Ohio State Buckeyes prepare to face the Florida Gators int he 2012 Gator Bowl the elements of Urban Meyer's new offense will have a chance to audition for the roles they will play in 2012. With the news that Ohio State will be banned from postseason play following next season, this is a chance to get in extra practice and repetitions that will not be there next season:

Meyer's Florida offenses were perhaps most associated with inside option routes. Meyer's heavy use of option routes comes straight from the original one-back coaches. The base play is simple. As Chris Brown states, "the outside receivers were to run straight and try to get open deep [or deep comebacks]. The inside receivers were to burst upfield to eight to twelve yards depending on the call. Against man-to-man, they cut inside or outside depending on the defender’s leverage; against zone they found a void between defenders and settled in it."

Quarterback Braxton Miller should thrive with the inside option routes. His ability to run the ball will likely fare well in Meyer's offense, especially since Tim Tebow thrived as both a runner and a passer under Meyer.

Gator Bowl 2012: Buckeyes Favored Against Punchless Gators

Much has been made about the 2012 Gator Bowl being the Urban Meyer Bowl. With the former Gators coach now headed to Columbus to take over the Ohio State program, the search for a main storyline does not take long. College Football news recognizes that this is about more than Meyer, however. The lackluster Florida offense is reason for concern for Florida:

Neither team can throw the forward pass. Florida is 102nd in the nation in total offense and it can’t stop turning the ball over. Ohio State is 116th in the nation in passing.

Braxton Miller's scrambling ability combined with Dan Herron and Carlos Hyde in the backfield provide the bulk of Ohio State's offense, giving the Gators a very difficult task. This will be an opportunity for Miller to work on his passing for the future. if Miller can develop as a consistent passer the Buckeyes will improve in a hurry, especially with Meyer already blowing up on the recruiting trail.

Gator Bowl 2012: Bill Connelly Picks Buckeyes

Now that hte 2011-12 bowl lineup is announced many experts are chiming in with their early picks in each game. SB Nation's Bill Connelly sees the Gator bowl as an excellent chance for the Ohio State Buckeyes to build momentum for 2012 when Urban Meyer takes over. Connelly has views all 35 bowl matchups and he picks the Buckeyes as his favorite to win over Florida:

2-Jan Gator 1:00 PM ESPN2 Ohio State Florida Ohio St. by 6 Ohio St. by 0.7

Connelly also expects Toledo to win its game with Air Force, but he thinks Ohio will lose to Utah State.

Meanwhile, SB Nation's Spencer Hall rates the Gator bowl as one of the worst games to watch of the bowl season:

23. Taxslayer.com Gator Bowl: Ohio State vs. Florida. If you are old enough to remember Bumfights, then you know what a hole the prohibition and elimination of this challenging and compelling video series was for our culture. Fortunately, the Taxslayer.com Gator Bowl is staging a one day revival of Bumfights featuring two teams with chronic anemia, shuffling coaching staffs wondering where their next check might be coming from, and Charlie Weis.

Hall expects that Ohio and Toledo's games will be better games to watch.

2011 Bowl Projections: The "Urban Meyer Bowl" Is One Of The Top Non-BCS Bowls

Among the storylines as we head into the bowl season is the the Gator Bowl on January 2. It is there that the Ohio State Buckeyes will face the Florida Gators in what some are calling the Urban Meyer Bowl. The new coach of the Buckeyes won't be on the sidelines, but this game pits his new team against his old team. The Gator roster is made up of several players that Meyer recruited to Gainesville. it is also a rematch of the 2007 National Championship Game:

You may remember that the Gators won that game, 41-14, to claim their second national title. That game was the only meeting in the two teams' history, and so Florida is 1-0 and undefeated all-time against Ohio State.

In other bowl games involving Ohio teams, the Ohio Bobcats are headed out to Boise, Idaho to face Utah State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl:

The Idaho Potato Bowl is one of the only games which is played in guaranteed frigid temperatures. Most all other bowls are in a warmer climate and/or are in a dome. And if you're a Midwesterner who has ever made the trek to Idaho, you know the air is drier than Triscuits. Can't imagine how much worse it is in December.

The Toledo Rockets also gained a bowl bid with an invite to the Military Bowl to face Air Force on December 28 in Washington, DC.
