Cleveland outscored the Boston Celtics 26-17 in the final quarter to earn a stunning road upset 88-87 on Sunday night. Kyrie Irving scored on a driving layup with two seconds left to give the Cavaliers the victory. Boston's last second attempt was off, allowing Cleveland to escape with the win.
Boston led 87-76 with just over four minutes to play, but the Celtics went cold as the Cavs scored the final 12 points of the ballgame. Irving finished the game with 23 points and six assists to lead the Cavs, but none were bigger than his final two points.
Anderson Verajao finished with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Alonzo Gee added an important 14 points off the bench. Gee also added six rebounds and four big steals to be an important catalyst off the bench. Cleveland now improves its record to 8-11 on the year, and they earned their fifth win away from home.
The Boston Celtics have been one of the hottest teams in the NBA in recent weeks, but the Cleveland Cavaliers have a slim 44-43 lead on the Boston Celtics at halftime in Boston. Anderson Verajao has scored 12 points while Kyrie Irving has nine points and four assists.
Ray Allen and Paul Pierce have led the Celtics with a combined 23 points, and as expected in a tight game, the statistics between the two teams are fairly even. Each team is 19 for 38 from the field so far. Ramon Sessions and Omri Casspi each have seven points to help Irving and Verajao.
Cleveland trailed 24-23 after one quarter, but responded with a 21-19 edge int he second period to move in front. It was a short jumper by Verajao with 25 seconds left in the half that put Cleveland in front with 25 seconds left.
