Indians trade: Mike Aviles, Yan Gomes not expected to push for starting spots

Mark L. Baer-US PRESSWIRE

Mike Aviles and Yan Gomes were acquired by the Indians on Saturday in exchange for pitcher Esmil Rogers.

Shortstop Mike Aviles and catcher Yan Gomes are not expected to compete for starting spots for the Indians. They were acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday in exchange for pitcher Esmil Rogers.

Aviles, who played 128 of his 136 games last season at shortstop, falls behind Asdrubal Cabrera on the depth chart. Aviles is also capable of playing third base and second base, but would not find a starting role at those positions either, as they are currently occupied by Jason Kipnis and youngster Lonnie Chisenhall.

Gomes will also fill backup role with his new team. Paul Hoynes of the Plain Dealer reports that GM Chris Antonetti does not expect Gomes to challenge catcher Carlos Santana for the starting job. Instead, Gomes will be given a chance to make the roster in spring training and is expected to challenge Lou Marson for playing time at the backup position. Gomes played 43 games as a rookie in 2012.
