Browns And Tom Heckert Did Not Know Redskins Offer For Rams Pick, According To Report

The biggest news of the weekend, non-NCAA hoops department, was the Redskins blockbuster deal with the St. Louis Rams to acquire the No. 2 overall pick - which they will almost certainly use to draft Baylor's Robert Griffin III. The Skins swapped first round picks in the 2012 draft with the Rams, and then threw in two additional first rounders and a second round pick.

Adam Schefter initially reported that the Browns had stepped up their efforts, and also put a deal on the table that included three first round picks, and that Tom Heckert sensed that the deal would get done before Washington swooped in. That report was refuted by Mary Kay Cabot on Sunday. Peter King, in his Monday Morning Quarterback, then shed some light on the bidding process, and revealed that Rams GM Les Snead did not tell each team what offer the other had on the table.

The most notable nugget in King's report is that Snead did not tell Heckert what the Skins offered, which could have sparked a bidding war auction that Daniel Snyder and Mike Shanahan may have been hell-bent on winning anyway. From King:

Snead was honest with the two teams most involved, Washington and Cleveland, and the third (Miami) on the periphery. He told them they were going to make a deal by the close of business Thursday, and they needed to make their best offer. According to one of the teams involved, Washington made an offer beyond what St. Louis ever thought it'd get -- three first-round picks and a second-rounder. Cleveland offered something less, thought to be three ones.
