NIT 2012 Schedule And Bracket: NIT Final Thursday Between Minnesota, Stanford

The Minnesota Golden Gophers and Stanford Cardinal will play for the NIT championship Thursday at Madison Square Garden in New York.

No. 6 seed Minnesota prevented an all-Pac-12 final by ousting the No. 1 seed Washington Huskies in overtime on Tuesday. Minnesota led by 12 at the break but blew the lead down the stretch, ultimately winning by one, 68-67, in overtime. Freshman guard Andre Hollins led the Gophers with 20. He is averaging more than 17 points per game in the NIT, nearly twice his regular season average.

The Cardinal, a No. 3 seed, beat No. 5 UMass 74-64 in the semifinal. Four different Stanford players scored at least a dozen, led by Anthony Brown's 18.

Both Minnesota and Stanford finished in the bottom half of the Big Ten and Pac-12, respectively. Minnesota's regular season ended on a horrid 1-6 stretch, dooming the Gophers to ninth in the conference. Stanford, meanwhile, finished seventh in the much maligned Pac-12. A win Thursday would certainly put a sheen on the season.

Thursday's game tips at 7 ET and will air on ESPN.

2012 NIT Tournament Schedule And Bracket: Cleveland State Bounced From NIT With First Round Loss To Stanford

The first day of the NIT is in the books, and all three Ohio teams were bounced from the tournament. Cleveland State, which traveled across the country to face Stanford, lost 75-65 in Palo Alto in a late night game that wrapped up a long evening of college basketball. The Viking season mercifully came to an end, as they hobbled off the floor.

Full NIT bracket can be found here.

Trey Harmon injured his right knee and did not play in the second half and star guard D'Aundray Brown was severely limited yet again with the groin injury that sent the Vikings season spiraling downwards and out of the NCAA tournament. In his final game, senior Jeremy Montgomery like the Vikes with 15 points but that Gary Waters simply did not have enough firepower on the offensive end to advance to the second round. Stanford moves on and will face the winner of Illinois State and Ole Miss, which tips off this evening. You can find a complete schedule for Day 2 below:

Schedule

No. 6 Minnesota vs. No. 3 La Salle - 7:00 p.m. ET, ESPN2
No. 6 UCF vs. No. 3 Drexel - 7:15 p.m. ET, ESPN3
No. 7 Northern Iowa vs. No. 2 Saint Joseph's - 7:15 p.m. ET, ESPN3
No. 7 Valparaiso vs. No. 2 Miami - 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPNU
No. 8 Bucknell vs. No. 1 Arizona - 9:00 p.m. ET, ESPN2
No. 5 Nevada Vs. No. 4 Oral Roberts - 9:15 p.m. ET, ESPN3

NIT 2012, Akron Vs. Northwestern Final Score: Wildcats Take Down Zips, 76-74

The Akron Zips' season didn't finish the way they had envisioned it. As the No. 1 seed in the Mid-American Conference tournament and taking on Ohio in the conference title game, I'm sure they expected to be dancing this upcoming weekend. Instead, they are already out of the NIT, falling to the Northwestern Wildcats in the opening round on Tuesday night, 76-74.

Junior guard Drew Crawford scored a game-high 27 points on 10-for-15 shooting for Northwestern. The Wildcats' all-time leading scorer John Shurna added 23 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists.

Akron was led by Quincy Diggs' 18 points off the bench.

The Zips trailed by eight at the half, but battled back to take the lead about seven minutes into the second. It was back-and-forth the rest of the way, but a Shurna three with 1:24 proved to be the game-winner after Akron missed their final four shots, including Alex Abreu's three-point attempt at the buzzer for the win.

Northwestern will now play the winner of the Washington/Texas-Arlington game.

NIT 2012, Dayton Vs. Iowa Final Score: Hawkeyes Takedown Flyers, 84-75

The 2012 NIT tipped off on ESPN on Tuesday night and the Iowa Hawkeyes made the most of their first postseason tournament game in six years by defeating the Dayton Flyers by nine, 84-75.

Freshman forward Aaron White scored a career-high 25 points on 10-for-15 shooting and sophomore forward Zach McCabe tied a career high by adding 20 on a perfect 9-for-9 shooting night. Thanks in large part to White and McCabe, the Hawkeyes shot a remarkable 57-percent from the field in the game. Dayton only shot 39-percent.

The game was 53-51 in Iowa's favor midway through the second half when the Hawkeyes went on an 18-5 run to extend their lead to 15 with about eight minutes remaining. The Flyers hit a couple three pointers at the end of the game to put the final within ten, but their deficit was 15 for most of those final minutes.

The No. 7 seeded Hawkeyes (18-16) advance to play at either LSU or Oregon in the second round.

The Hawkeyes were just one game over .500 at 17-16, but it was their most successful season in years and this will be their first postseason game for this Senior class. While they're the lower seed, the Big Ten's eighth place team is still favored by four points. The game will get the national spotlight and be broadcast on ESPN.

Akron Vs. Northwestern: Pair Of Near-Miss NCAA Teams Hook Up In NIT

The No. 5-seed Akron Zips will be in Evanston, Ill., Tuesday to take on No. 4 Northwestern in the opening round of the NIT.

Northwestern, which is 18-13 overall and went 8-10 in the Big Ten, has famously never made the NCAA Tournament, a storyline that gained steam recently. The Wildcats were teetering precariously on the bubble entering the Big Ten Tournament, where they were dispatched in the first round by Minnesota, which went just 6-12 in the Big Ten this season.

Akron, meanwhile, will have to flush its own NCAA Tournament disappointment. The Zips lost 64-63 to Ohio in the MAC Tournament title game. Even after that defeat Akron owned a top-60 RPI ranking, according to RealTimeRPI.com and StatSheet.com. But a weak MAC schedule – coupled with a pedestrian 22-11 overall record – kept Akron out of the big dance despite winning the regular season conference title with a 13-3 mark.

Northwestern is paced by the school’s all-time leading scorer, John Shurna. Shurna averaged 19.8 points per game this season, connecting on 46.7 percent of his field goal attempts and nearly 43 percent of his three-pointers. Drew Crawford is second on the team with 16.1 points.

Akron relies on a balanced attack which features six players who average between 8.8 and 10.2 points. Proof of the parity: Despite winning the regular season conference title, not a single player was named All-MAC First-Team.

Tuesday's game tips at 9 ET and will air on ESPN2. The winner will take on the winner of Washington and Texas-Arlington. The entire NIT bracket can be found here.
