Big East Championship 2012, Cincinnati Vs. Louisville: Bearcats Come Up Short Against Cardinals

Despite an improved offensive effort in the second half, the Cincinatti Bearcats were unable to complete a run for the Big East tournament championship, falling to Lousiville 50-44 on Saturday night.

After scoring just 14 points in the first half, Cincinnati picked up the pace and surged back into the game in the closing minutes, but couldn't convert late with the game on the line.

Cashmere Wright was magnificent for the Bearcats in the second half, and finished with 16 points to lead his team. The Bearcats had a chance to crawl within two points with 30 seconds left in the game, but missed a pair of free throws to keep the margin at four.

The Bearcats are still NCAA tournament bound, and will learn their postseason fate tomorrow night during college basketball's selection show.

Big East Tournament 2012: Cincinnati Upsets Syracuse 71-68 To Advance To The Championship

Dust off the dictionary of sports cliches. Only the finest chestnuts are needed to describe what the Cincinnati Bearcats did in New York City on Friday night. The fourth-seeded Bearcats knocked off the top-seeded Syracuse Orange by a final score of 71-68 in the semifinals of the Big East tournament.

Syracuse had lost one game all season, prior to tonight. They were ranked second in the nation in both major polls. Their NCAA tournament invitation is safe, but their pride has to be a little wounded.

Cincinnati must have picked up a little steam from a double overtime win against Georgetown on Thursday. They certainly did not look at all exhausted from their previous game, jumping out to a commanding 22-8 lead halfway through the first.

Syracuse battled back in the second half, outscoring Cincinnati 45-36. Still the Bearcats beat back a late rally to hang on for the win.

Sean Kilpatrick led Cincinnati with 18 points, three rebounds and five assists. He hit six of nine three-pointers on the night. Yancey Gates also scored 18, and added a team-high seven rebounds.

Dion Waiters led Syracuse with 28 points. Fab Melo was the only other Orange player to score in double digits with 11.

Cincinnati advances next plays in the Big East championship game on Saturday night at 9:00 p.m. They will face the winner of the Notre Dame-Louisville game. View the complete Big East bracket here.

Cincinnati Vs. Georgetown Final Score: Bearcats Advance With 72-70 Win Over Hoyas in Double OT

The No. 4 seed Cincinnati Bearcats needed double-overtime to beat the No. 5 Georgetown Hoyas, 72-70 in a classic Big East Tournament quarterfinal game.

Cincinnati guard Cashmere Wright made a soft, running bank shot with eight seconds remaining in the second overtime which would prove to be the game-winning bucket for the Bearcats. Following Wright's score, Cincinnati forced a contested, three-point shot from Georgetown forward Henry Sims which bounced off the rim at the buzzer.

Cincinnati needed both overtimes after failing to close out Georgetown in regulation and the first overtime, despite a strong effort to fight back in regulation to put themselves in position to win.

After falling behind by ten points with just over nine minutes to play, Cincinnati closed the game in strong fashion, using a 16-4 run to take a two point lead with 25 seconds left in the game. Georgetown kept playing, worked the ball around and finally found Otto Porter who coaxed in a short jump shot to tie the game with four seconds left which put the game into overtime.

Cincinnati appeared to have the game in control in the first overtime after taking a three-point lead, but Dion Dixon missed a free throw to give Georgetown the ball down two. After Cincinnati shut down the perimeter for the Hoyas, Henry Sims took the ball in the lane and made a layup with less than a second to play to send the game into double-overtime.

Yancy Gates fought through the Georgetown zone defense to score 20 points with seven rebounds. Sims led the way for the Hoyas with 16 points and 15 rebounds

Cincinnati now plays top seed Syracuse in the semifinals on Friday after the Orange survived on to beat Connecticut 58-55 in overtime.
