The Cleveland Indians came away with a key series win over a sinking Los Angeles Angels squad on Sunday, as starter Derek Lowe paved the way to a 4-0 victory with an abundance of ground ball outs.
Lowe, who continues to impress now that he's back in the American League, tossed 107 pitches over 7.2 shutout innings, allowing just three hits and two walks. He lowered his season ERA to 2.27 with the performance, and looks like a drastically different pitcher than the one who lost 17 times and posted a 5.05 ERA just last year with the Braves.
Angels newcomer Albert Pujols finished the game 0-for-4 from the plate to drop his season average to .216, as Los Angeles hitters could only muster three hits all afternoon. The Indians used an error by LA outfielder Torii Hunter to plate a pair of unearned runs in the fifth inning, and added two more in the eighth after a separate error with the bases loaded extended the inning.
Now 11-9 on the year, the Indians have a three-game series with the Chicago White Sox on the road starting on Tuesday, before a three-game weekend series with the Texas Rangers.

The Cleveland Indians struggled to score runs against Los Angeles Angles' right-hander Dan Haren, losing a 2-1 decision on a blustery night that favored the pitchers over hitters. On Sunday, the Indians will look to crank up the offense and beat the Angels to add to their win on Friday to take the weekend series.
Cleveland will turn to veteran right-hander Derek Lowe (3-1) to slow down the Angles' offense which is still looking to break out with Albert Pujols. Lowe is coming off of a win over Kansas City in his last outing when he spread out eight hits over six innings and allowed just one run.
The Angels will counter with right-hander Ervin Santana (0-4). Like the Angels offense, Santana has struggled mightily in his first four starts, no only losing all four but also mounting a 7.23 ERA along the way. Santana certainly isn't getting any help as the Los Angeles offense hasn't scored a run in Santana's last three starts.
Despite losing three of their last four games, Cleveland holds a percentage points lead in the Central Division over Detroit. The Tigers won on Saturday after losing five in a row.
The game is scheduled to start at 1:05 p.m. ET and will be televised on SportsTime Ohio.

The Cleveland Indians can now only get a series victory - not a sweep - over the Los Angeles Angels when they play in game three on Sunday, as the Tribe dropped game two by a score of 2-1. Cleveland fell due to a strong outing from Dan Haren, who pitched eight full innings, giving up just one earned run and four hits for a 3.34 earned run average. He improves to 1-1 on the season.
Cleveland was only able to muster offense in the fourth inning, when Jason Kipnis singled to right center and then Asdrubal Cabrera was walked. Haren almost got out of the inning scoreless after Travis Hafner flied out to left and Carlos Santana struck out swinging, but Jack Hannahan singled to right, scoring Kipnis. Cabrera and Hannahan advanced on a wild pitch, but Shelley Duncan ended up striking out looking and that was the end of the fourth.
Los Angeles took advantage early, with Kendrys Morales scoring Howard Kendrick in the first inning with a single and Torii Hunter hitting a homerun at the top of the fourth to go up 2-0. Albert Pujols had one hit and struck out once in four at bats. Starter Jeanmar Gomez was given the loss for the Indians, giving up five hits over six innings with two earned runs and two walks with seven strikeouts.
Game three is set for 1:05 p.m. eastern on Sunday.

The Cleveland Indians (10-8) and Los Angeles Angels (6-14) will get right back to work as the two teams are set to square off on Saturday at Progressive Field in the second game of a three-game weekend set. Fresh off a thrilling walk-off 3-2 win by the Indians on Friday night, Cleveland will look to string together a couple of wins against a struggling Angels ball club.
The projected starters for Saturday are Dan Haren for the Halos and Jeanmar Gomez for the Tribe. Haren is 0-1 this season in four starts and has a 4.07 ERA with 23 strikeouts in 24.1 innings pitched. Gomez is 1-0 this season in two starts and has a 1.93 ERA with six strikeouts in 9.1 innings pitched. Gomez has only allowed four hits all season.
Los Angeles has now lost nine of their last 12 and are in the midst of a five-game losing streak that spans to last Saturday. With a win on Saturday, the Indians will close out the first month of the season with a winning record.

The Cleveland Indians nearly wasted a strong pitching performance from Justin Masterson, but shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera came up with a single in the bottom of the ninth to score Aaron Cunningham with the game-winning run as the Indians beat the Los Angeles Angels, 3-2.
Masterson put up a masterful outing, pitching into the ninth inning and allowing just two runs on four hits, as the Cleveland offense struggled to give Masterson much run support. Finally in the bottom of the seventh inning, center fielder Michael Brantley broke through with a run-scoring double and then scored himself one batter later when second baseman Jason Kipnis singled him home.
With the game tied in the ninth inning, Vinnie Pestano relieved Masterson to strike out Vernon Wells and Erick Aybar which shut down a threat by the Angles to keep the game tied going into the bottom of the ninth. Pestano picked up the win thanks to Cabrera's game-winner.
