Ubaldo Jimenez Suspension: Manny Acta Says Indians' Pitcher To Drop Appeal

Originally, Cleveland Indians head coach Manny Acta said that Ubaldo Jimenez was planning to appeal his five-game suspension for plunking Troy Tulowitzki. Jimenez insisted that the pitch simply got away from him, a common way pitchers explain away hit batsmen, but there's history between Jimenez and Tulowitzki that suggests otherwise.

On Saturday, Indians beat writer Jordan Bastian tweeted that Jimenez plans to drop his appeal after his start today:

The Indians starting the season with a 16 inning game probably didn't help the their pitching, either.

Indians Vs. Blue Jays Final Score: Toronto Takes Out Tribe In 16 Innings, 7-4

Through eight innings, it looked like the Indians were going to come away from their home opener with a quick, clean victory. Unfortunately, Chris Perez happened in the ninth inning, in which the Tribe's closer walked two and gave up three hits in allowing three runs in less than a full inning of work.

After Perez blew the save, the Indians and Blue Jays gave the Opening Day crowd seven extra innings of free baseball, including some excitement in the 13th inning when the benches cleared after Shin-Soo Choo, who was plunked earlier in the game, had his tower buzzed.

But the fans would go home unhappy after Blue Jays' catcher J.P. Arencibia belted his first hit in seven at bats over the wall in left for a three-run homer of Jair Asencio in the top half of the 16th inning. The Indians couldn't make a comeback similar to the one the Blue Jays made in the ninth in the bottom half of the 16th.

Perez's blown save blew more than just an Indians win; he also blew Justin Masterson's masterful gem of an outing, in which Masterson struck out 10 hitters in eight innings of one-run ball.

Indians Vs. Blue Jays: Jack Hannahan Home Run Puts Cleveland Up 4-0

Jack Hannahan barely even won the starting third base job over Lonnie Chisenhall in spring training, but wasted little time affirming his manager's decision on Opening Day for the Cleveland Indians.

In his first at bat of the season, Hannahan knocked a three-run homer out of the yard to extend Cleveland's advantage to 4-0 over the visiting Toronto Blue Jays after just two innings. Hannahan, who was slotted in the ninth spot in the order, entered the season with 23 career home runs and a .231 average and could have bought himself a bit more playing time in the near future if his bat stays hot.

In addition to Hannahan, Cleveland starter Justin Masterson also looks sharp in the early going with five strikeouts and only one hit allowed. Masterson will be counted on for a big year as the most consistent presence in the Indians' starting rotation.
