After an amazing post-season runt hat say the Golden Flashes reach the College World Series for the first time ever several Kent State players are earning some well deserved post-season honors. Senior shortstop Jimmy Rider was the first, earning a first-team All-America nod from Baseball America:
Rider is one of eight seniors in the country to garner such honors and is the first Kent State student-athlete to be named to the first team in program history. Mike Gulan (third baseman, 1992) and Emmanuel Burriss (shortstop, 2006) garnered Second Team honors from Baseball America.
Catcher David Lyon has also earned post-season honors, being named a second team All-American for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award:
Lyon is joined on the Second Team by Jacksonville State pitcher Todd Hornsby, Kentucky third baseman Thomas McCarthy, Louisiana State shortstop Austin Nola and Army infielder Zach Price. Florida State outfielder James Ramsey won the 2012 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award and is joined on the First Team by Clemson catcher/first baseman/outfielder Phil Pohl, South Carolina pitcher/first baseman Michael Roth, Texas A&M pitcher Ross Stripling and Florida infielder/outfielder Preston Tucker.
A total of six players were drafted by Major League Baseball as well.
The South Carolina Gamecocks are two wins away from a third-straight College World Series title, but they'll have to get past one of the hottest teams in the country to do so.
To simply reach the Finals, Ray Tanner's Gamecock squad had to beat Kent State and Arkansas (twice) in a 36-hour span. That's been the hallmark of this South Carolina program over the past few years: resiliency. South Carolina (49-18) replaced five starters from last season's National Championship team but got nice contributions from guys like LB Dantzler and, of course, ace lefty Michael Roth to get back to Omaha.
For all the hoopla surrounding Carolina, this Arizona squad seems content to sit in the background and simply play ball. The Wildcats (46-17) have won eight straight postseason games and have yet to lose in the NCAA Tournament. They're seeking the program's fourth national title.
Arizona, led by Pac-12 Player of the Year Alex Mejia, Johnny Field, Robert Refsnyder and Bobby Brown, among others, finished fourth in the country this season in batting average (.330) and sixth in scoring (7.4 runs per game).
The Wildcats will send sophomore righty Konner Wade (10-3) to the hill in Game 1. Wade spun a complete-game five-hit shutout of UCLA in Arizona's CWS opener. Tanner is undecided on a starter for the Gamecocks.
First pitch on ESPN2 is scheduled for 8 pm Eastern.

The South Carolina Gamecocks ended the post-season run of the Kent State Golden Flashes on Thursday with a 4-1 win to remain alive in the double-elimination portion of the College World Series.
That was just the start of a busy two days for the South Carolina as rain and an undefeated Arkansas team forced the Gamecocks to play and win three games in two days in order to win Bracket 2 of the CWS and advance to the Championship Finals series against the Arizona Wildcats.
No rest for the weary now, as the two-time defending champion Gamecocks will catch their breath on Saturday before taking a shot at their third-straight title starting Sunday night in the best of three series.

The Kent State Golden Flashes' magical run through the NCAA baseball tournament suddenly ended with a loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks in the College World Series on Thursday. While it may be tough to digest the finality of the season-ending loss after riding high for so long, Kent State manager Scott Stricklin realizes there is no time to look back.
Instead, Stricklin is ready to make up for lost time on the recruiting trail and see if some quality players liked what they saw from the Flashes in the NCAA Tournament.
"We're behind in recruiting right now," head coach Scott Stricklin said after Thursday's elimination from the College World Series. "We'll be on the road very quickly to catch up.
"We're not able to see recruits because we're out here, but recruits have been able to see us. That's the biggest key to coming out here, you're in the limelight, you're on the national stage. And the kids you've been in contact with for the last year have gotten to see us play."
One thing this tournament has proven is that good pitching is critical and Stricklin would like to attract a few fresh arms to join him in Northeast Ohio. He's also looking for help in the outfield and behind the plate to help sustain the current success into the future. After making their run to the CWS in Omaha some of those quality recruits will be looking for Kent State, as well.

The Kent State Golden Flashes just couldn't keep their thrilling run alive on Thursday, falling to South Carolina in an elimination game. The game ended 4-1 in South Carolina's favor as Michael Roth pitched a two-hitter to stem the Flashes and their strong run.
Their run included a 5-4 win over the No. 1-seeded Florida Gators and three SEC opponent victims in total. But they ran into South Carolina, who had won 22-straight postseason games prior to falling to Arkansas and being put into this elimination matchup. South Carolina will now go on to take on Arkansas again on Thursday night as part of a double header due to the rain-out on Wednesday.
Grayson Greiner and Chase Vergason hit RBI singles in the second inning to take the 2-1 lead the Gamecocks would not relinquish. LB Dantzler hit a homerun in the third inning against Tyler Skulina to put the Gamecocks up 3-1. In the second inning, Sawyer Polen had an RBI single for the Golden Flashes, but after that point, Roth struck out eight batters without walking anyone. Roth was as advertised, retiring the final 22 batters he faced in order on his way to the third complete game of his career.
It was a dominating performance by Roth. Had he been even slightly off, Kent State may have been able to extend their strong postseason play. In its first College World Series appearance, Kent State finished with a 1-2 record.

After getting rained out Wednesday, Kent State and South Carolina will play Thursday at noon Eastern in Bracket 2 of the College World Series.
Each team comes in with one loss, so the loser will be sent packing while the winner will turn around and play Arkansas at 9 p.m. Eastern -- also on Thursday.
According to the Associated Press, the weather hasn't affected Kent State's pitching plans. Tyler Skulina, 11-2, will make his scheduled start against South Carolina. Should the Golden Flashes defeat the two-time defending CWS champion Gamecocks, then David Starn, 11-4, or Ryan Mace, 2-3, would likely start against Arkansas.
In Bracket 1, Florida State beat UCLA on Tuesday. The Seminoles advanced to play undefeated Arizona on Thursday at 5 p.m. Eastern.
Should the Noles win, the two teams would play again Friday at 5 p.m. Eastern; if the Wildcats win, they will advance to the championship against the winner of Bracket 2.
The Kent State-South Carolina College World Series game has been postponed to Thursday due to rain.
The Golden Flashes and the Gamecocks were supposed to match up in an elimination game on Wednesday night, but the weather in Omaha had other plans. Heavy showers moved into the area about an hour before the first pitch was scheduled to be thrown and the rain continued into the night. The game was delayed, then postponed.
The first pitch is now scheduled for 12:08 p.m. ET on Thursday afternoon. It will air on ESPN2.
If the Golden Flashes win, they will play twice on Thursday. There will be a triple-header of CWS games Thursday, with Arizona playing Florida State at 4:08 p.m ET and the winner of Kent State-South Carolina playing Arkansas at 8:08 p.m. ET.

Without question two of the most intriguing teams remaining in the 2012 College World Series, the Kent State Golden Flashes and South Carolina Gamecocks will clash on Wednesday night for an all-important elimination game.
One of college baseball's dominant forces lately, South Carolina's 22-game postseason win streak came to an abrupt halt against Arkansas over the weekend, forcing USC into its first must-win situation in two years. Polar opposites as the resident Cinderella of the field, the Golden Flashes will be looking to oust their 3rd SEC opponent of the tournament if they can pull off yet another upset after already having dispensed of Florida and Kentucky.
With so much media focus on the game, South Carolina coach Ray Tanner is well aware of Kent State's propensity to leave elite-caliber squads scratching their heads. "They're very good," Tanner said. "I got a chance to watch them in the Super Regional against Oregon. They had a hard-fought game [Sunday] and they were able to hang on and win."
The two teams will get underway at 8:00 p.m ET on Wednesday with a trip to college baseball's version of the Final Four on the line. The game can be seen on television at ESPN or online through the Watch ESPN app.

It will be a somewhat quiet day for the College World Series on Wednesday, with only one game. It's a big one though, as the South Carolina Gamecocks (46-18) try to push themselves back up after being flattened by Arkansas and get back to the finals, where they've taken home the title two years in a row now.
Facing elimination, the Gamecocks will take on a surprisingly spry Kent State Golden Flashes (47-19) team who were able to overcome the best team in the nation, the Florida Gators, in their last elimination game after also being beaten by the Razorbacks.
Whoever wins the elimination match-up will get the right to take on Arkansas again on Thursday in the semifinal.
The game will be at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha at 8:00 p.m. ET. It is being broadcast nationally on ESPN.

Kent State's Jason Bagoly overcame personal loss to turn in a huge performance Monday in the Golden Flashes' upset win of Florida at the College World Series.
Bagoly, a backup catcher, learned on Thursday -- one day after the team arrived in Ohama -- that his mother had passed away.
Fox Sports Ohio's Zac Johnson detailed Bagoly's personal story in this article, which ran Tuesday.
Kent State coach Scott Stricklin is quoted saying:
"I just knew how tough [Bagoly] is," Stricklin said. "I knew he'd respond. I asked him how he felt, and he said he felt good. I brought him and (usual designated hitter) Nick Hamilton both in my office before the game and told them [Bagoly would start]. Nick handled it great, and then Jason and I talked.
"He said he was feeling good. He gave me a hug, then he went out there and had the best game of his career."
Bagly finished the Monday's game 2-3 with a sacrifice bunt and a run.
Yahoo.com also had a story on Bagoly.

The College World Series rolls along Tuesday with a Bracket 1 elimination game, followed by Wednesday's Bracket 2 elimination game featuring Kent State.
Tuesday's Bracket 1 game will pit UCLA against Florida State. Each team has one loss, which means the loser will be sent packing and the winner will advance to Thursday's showdown with undefeated Arizona, which has wins over Stony Brook and UCLA. Should the UCLA/Florida State winner down the Wildcats, then it would be Zona's first loss -- which means the two teams would have a rematch Friday at 5 p.m. Eastern.
A complete College World Series bracket is available here.
In Bracket 2 action Wednesday, Kent State will take on two-time defending College World Series champion South Carolina. USC won its CWS opener against Florida but then lost 2-1 to Arkansas, which, like Arizona, is still undefeated. Kent State, meanwhile, started out with an 8-1 drubbing at the hands of Arkansas but then notched a 5-4 win over Florida on Monday.
As such, the USC/Kent State winner will take on Arkansas Thursday at 9 Eastern. Should either team beat Arkansas, the two would play again -- for the right to advance to the title match against the Bracket 1 winner -- Friday at 9 p.m. Eastern.

The Kent State Golden Flashes avoided elimination in the 2012 College World Series on Monday night, beating the Florida Gators 5-4 in Omaha.
The Golden Flashes jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning and led 5-1 after four. Florida rallied back to make it 5-4 after seven and that's how it would end.
George Roberts went 2-for-4 with two RBI's for Kent State. David Lyon went 3-for-5.
Ryan Bores got the win for the Golden Flahes, pitching six innings, giving up six hits and two runs. He struck out two. Josh Pierce earned the save.
It was win or go home for both teams, as Florida lost its first game to the defending champion South Carolina Gamecocks in an upset on Saturday night. The Golden Flashes lost their game 8-1 on Saturday to the Arkansas Razorbacks. The No. 1 nationally ranked Gators stunningly find their season over. It's the second time in 13 years that the top seed didn't win a single game in Omaha.
With the win, Kent State's next game is Wednesday. The Golden Flashes will face the loser of the South Carolina/Arkansas game on Monday.

It's a tough go for a Cinderella story in the College World Series, and if the Kent State Golden Flashes want to continue theirs, they're going to need to beat the best. They'll face the Florida Gators in a must win game after losing 8-1 to the Arkansas Razorbacks in their first game. The Gators were the best team in the nation this season but were upset by the defending champion South Carolina Gamecocks and found themselves in the loser's bracket.
Whichever team loses in the Monday match-up will have their season end, which would be incredibly bittersweet for a Florida team that had absolutely destroyed opponents in the regular season.
Ryan Bores (9-3, 3.35 ERA) will get the start for the Flashes and face off against tough Florida starter Hudson Randall (9-2, 2.61ERA). Randall, picked in the seventh round of this year's draft by the Detroit Tigers, has been fantastic all time in NCAA Tournament starts with a 5-1 record all time for the Gators.
The game will be at TD Ameritrade Park at 5 p.m. ET. It will be televised nationally on ESPN2.

If the Kent St. Golden Flashes are going to avoid an 0-2 performance in the 2012 College World Series they will have to do it the hard-way. After losing to Arkansas in its opener Kent State now must face the Florida Gators, who were the No. 1 overall National Seed in this year's NCAA Tournament.
Florida was upset by two-time defending National Champion South Carolina 7-3 on Saturday night to fall into and elimination game with the Golden Flashes. SB Nation's Alligator Army wrote about the loss to the Gamecocks:
Florida is college baseball's best team this year. These Gators can hit, pitch, field, rip off 18 straight wins against a merciless non-conference schedule, go cold, return to their previous temperature, coast through the NCAA Tournament to earn a trip to Omaha and the College World Series, have nine players taken in the MLB Draft, and generally look like the finest team in the nation and the finest team in school history.
First pitch is at 5 p.m. ET on Monday.

After a run through the NCAA Tournament that sent the Kent St. Golden Flashes to the College World Series for the first time the MAC program was one of the darlings of the NCAA Tournament, If that run is going to to continue the Golden Flashes will have to do it the hard way. In the program's first College World Series game the Arkansas Razorbacks were dominant, cruising to an 8-1 victory in Omaha.
Kent State was held to just four hits and managed only a sixth inning run. By that time Arkansas had already scored five times and they blew it open with a three run eighth inning. David Starn was tested, throwing 102 pitches but only lasting five and two thirds innings. Arkansas scored single runs in the first, second, and fifth before touching Starn for two more

The Kent State Golden Flashes are making their first appearance in the College World Series Saturday when they take on the Arkansas Razorbacks. This Kent State team is one made up of 27 Ohio-bred players, but there's a few in particular who almost didn't make the journey.
As Cleveland.com noted on Friday, pitcher Ryan Bores initially signed with Ohio University. designated hitter Nick Hamilton began his career at Xavier, catcher Troy Summers started out at Akron, pitcher Michael Clark first went to North Carolina State and pitcher Tyler Skulina started his college career at Virginia.
But it's Bores (9-3, 3.85 ERA), Kent State's starting pitcher for Monday's game, who has been with the most programs in the fewest amount of time. This is Bores college team in three years after going to Ohio University, then transferring to Cleveland State only to find out the program would be terminated shortly after.
He found a home with the Golden Flashes, though. And that much has landed him in the College World Series.
"Three schools in three years, but it's paid off. It's been a pretty good ride. Now I'm soaking it all in." - Ryan Bores

Some storied Kent State baseball players of yesteryear have closely followed the team's run to the 2012 College World Series, according to Bill Lubinger of the Plain Dealer.
Among those quoted in the article is Steve Stone, now more famous as a broadcaster but who was previously a pitcher who graduated in 1970 and went on to have an 11-year career in the majors.
Stone, currently a broadcaster for the Chicago White Sox, had this to say of his alma mater:
"It's nice. It's nice to see," Stone said, "and this, of course, is one of the real exciting things to anyone who was associated at all with Kent State University. I'm very excited for the boys and for coach Stricklin."
[...]
"It reminds me a little bit of the Baltimore teams I played on," he said, "because if you broke out the rosters man for man, we weren't as good as some, but we played as a team."
Former Kent State players Gene Michael, Rich Rollins and Dirk Hayhurst are also quoted in the article.

The Kent State Golden Flashes are in Omaha preparing for their first College World Series game on Saturday against the Arkansas Razorbacks. Head coach Scott Stricklin admitted to the Akron Beacon Journal that, after losing four players to the MLB draft, he didn't expect them to be here:
"I'd like to say I did, but we lost so much talent," Stricklin said by phone Tuesday, less than 24 hours after the Flashes beat host Oregon 3-2 in the deciding Game 3 in Eugene, Ore. "I felt confident we'd compete for the (Mid-American Conference) title. But no, I can't say I saw this coming."
Stricklin went on to say that "it just hasn't settled in quite yet" that his team is on this stage. On Wednesday night, Kent State is practicing at Creighton University. On Thursday, it will have an open practice at the 24,505-seated TD Ameritrade Park from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. ET, via recordpub.com.

Two-time defending College World Series champion South Carolina -- as well as a few more college baseball bluebloods -- await Kent State in the College World Series.
Making its first College World Series appearance, Kent State is grouped with three SEC schools which, combined, have been to the CWS eight times since 2009.
The Golden Flashes' first game will be Saturday at 5 p.m. Eastern against Arkansas. Rounding out the SEC trio is Florida, which is 29th all-time in wins and which was the national No. 1 seed in this year's tournament, and South Carolina, which has won back-to-back CWS titles.
In a double-elimination format, the four teams will square off against one another until a winner emerges. That winner will have a three-game series against the winner of the other bracket. (If confused, click here, and then click the middle box.)

The Kent State Golden Flashes will advance to the College World Series after beating the Oregon Ducks 3-2 Monday night. Shortstop Jim Rider was the hero for the Golden Flashes. He scored Derek Toadvine on a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to win Kent State the game and give them a trip to Omaha.
After Kent State took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, no runs were scored until the top of the eighth. That's when Ryon Healy's double scored two runs for the Ducks.
The Game 3 win is the Golden Flashes' 22nd in 23 tries, after losing Game 2 on Sunday.
With the win, Kent State is the first MAC team since 1976 to advance to the College World Series.

The Kent State Golden Flashes looked primed and poised to be the first MAC team to make it to Omaha for the College World Series since 1976 in strong fashion, but faltered a little when their 21 game winning streak was snapped by the Oregon Ducks in game two of their series. The 3-2 loss didn't kill the Golden Flashes' chances though, they will still have a shot to win the series on Monday in the deciding Game 3 of their series.
Both game one and game two have been very close affairs, with Oregon almost taking the first game except for a great catch in the ninth inning, and it was only a bad seventh inning featuring two errors that lost the one run game two for Kent State. With a trip to Omaha on the line, both teams will need to be at their best since a single mistake could win Game 3.

Kent State's incredible 21-game winning streak came to an end late Sunday night in Eugene, as the Flashes dropped the second game of the Super Regional against Oregon. The Golden Flashes led for most of the game until a costly two-error seventh inning led to the three runs for the Ducks, who closed it out for the 3-2 win.
George Roberts opened the scoring for Kent with a massive blast to left field in the second inning. In his next at-bat, Roberts added to the lead with a ripped double to centerfield that scored catcher David Lyon. KSU would squander an opportunity to plate additional insurance in the fourth but they would hold the 2-0 lead until the Ducks' rally in the seventh. Ryan Bores had a strong start for Kent, but the hiccups on defense were his undoing in the three-run Oregon rally.
Kent had a chance to tie it in the bottom of the ninth but could not even it up after T.J. Sutton led off with a double. A sacrifice bunt try failed, stranding Sutton at second with one out. Oregon then brought on closer Jimmie Sherfy, who quickly struck out the final two batters to preserve the win. It was a frustrating loss but Kent will still have an opportunity to become the first MAC team to reach Omaha since 1976 with a win on Monday night.

The Kent State Golden Flashes are only one win away from the College World Series in Omaha, and their opponent will have to go the full three games in the Super Regionals to make it. Kent State, if they win, will play the winner between Arkansas and Baylor. The Razorbacks stretched that best-of-three series to a third game on Monday with a 5-4 win over Baylor.
Baylor was three outs away from advancing when Arkansas scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth to stay alive. Baylor's shortstop booted a potential game-ending double-play to load that bases, then Baylor hit the next two batters to give Arkansas the victory.
Monday's winner-take-all game between Baylor and Arkansas will take place at 6 pm Monday.

After a thrilling Game 1 win over Oregon in Super Regional play, the Kent State Golden Flashes are one victory away from Omaha. Game 2 will take place late Sunday night, with first pitch coming at 10 p.m. ET in Eugene. The Flashes are going for a remarkable 22nd straight win as they continue their magical run through the postseason, from Avon to Gary and now Eugene.
The Flashes never trailed on Saturday night but the Ducks took it down to the wire, as KSU and ace David Starn got out of one jam after another. The game finished with a miraculous diving catch in centerfield by Evan Campbell to close it out with the bases loaded. With a trip to Omaha on the line, Strongsville's Ryan Bores will get the ball in Game 2. Oregon will counter with Jake Reed. Schedule and broadcast information below:

The Kent State Golden Flashes continued their strong post-season run through the NCAA Tournament with a 7-6 win over the Oregon Ducks in Game 1 of the Super Regional between the two teams. The win extended Kent State's current winning streak to 21 games, but it wasn't easy.
Oregon rallied in the bottom of the ninth inning and appeared poised to win the game with the bases loaded but Kent State center fielder Evan Campbell denied the comeback, as explained in the AP story.
The Golden Flashes were clinging to a narrow lead in the bottom of the ninth in the opening game of their NCAA super regional against Oregon on Saturday night. With the bases loaded and two outs, J.J. Altobelli of the Ducks hit the ball to deep center.
"As I was running, it kept going and kept carrying," Campbell said. "It was close."
But Campbell made the diving catch and Kent State extended the nation's longest winning streak to 21 games with a 7-6 victory.
The win moves Kent State one win away from a trip to Omaha for the NCAA College World Series as they take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series against Oregon. Game 2 will be played Sunday night at 10:00 p.m ET.

The Kent State Golden Flashes are having an extremely strong postseason, having won the Gary Regional through a crazy series of games. There was a 21-inning game for one, and then there was the strong outing against Kentucky on Sunday night, when Evan Campbell hit a three-run homerun in the top of the eighth inning to break a 0-0 game and Kent State eventually walked away with a 3-2 win.
Casey Williams pitched the final six outs to send the Flashes to the Super Regionals, where they're going to be taking on the Oregon Ducks. Kent State is now on a 20-game winning streak and it's their first appearance in an NCAA Super Regional. The Ducks are hosting their first Super Regional since the program was reinstated in 2009, and for the first time since 1954. Both teams are pretty evenly matched and it should be an exciting one.

It was a bizarre weekend in which the Golden Flashes won a 21-inning game, beat the regional hosts, then hit the only home run in six games, but Kent State won an NCAA baseball regional for the first time in school history and will travel to Eugene, Oregon Ducks in the Super Regionals.
Kent State beat Kentucky 3-2 on Sunday night behind Evan Campbell's three-run homer in the top of the 8th inning. Campbell broke a 0-0 pitchers duel between Chandler Shepherd and Tyler Skulina as both teams struggled to find offense.
Kentucky responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning on RBIs from Thomas McCarthy and Jeff Boehm. Casey Williams pitched got the final six outs to earn the save and send the Flashes to the Super Regionals.

The Kent State Golden Flashes continued their strong post-season play on Saturday night, earning a spot in the championship game at the NCAA Tournament Gary Regional by knocking off the No. 1 seeded Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday night.
The Golden Flashes knocked out top Purdue pitcher Lance Breedlove with a 5-run second innning and then made the early lead hold up thanks to an impressive and much-needed pitching performance by Kent State right-hander Ryan Bores. After using five pitchers in 21 innings on Friday night to beat Kentucky, the complete-game win by Bores sets up Kent State with plenty of arms ready to go in the championship game.
Kent State will play the winner of the Purdue vs. Kentucky loser-out game played prior to the championship game on Sunday night. In the double-elimination format, Kent State will have a second chance if they lose on Sunday night, with a winner-take-all championship game on Monday night.
The winner of the Gary Regional will advance to play the winner of the Eugene Regional in a best 2 out of 3 games at the Super Regional, with a trip to the College World Series on the line.

Still locked-in at the plate after their 21-inning thriller victory against Kentucky on Friday night, the Kent State Golden Flashes pulled off yet another upset with an impressive 7-3 win over the No. 1 seeded Purdue Boilermakers in Saturday's Regional winner's game.
The two teams opened the game each sending a runner across the plate in the first inning, but it quickly became evident that Kent State was merely warming up, as they pounded Purdue starter Lance Breedlove for five more runs in the second inning alone to break the game wide open. In an early 6-2 hole, the Boilermakers would manage to score just one more time throughout the final seven innings against Kent State starter Ryan Bores.
Bores, who went all nine innings and scattered nine hits to pick up the win, fanned only two Purdue batters during a performance that featured a bevy of both ground and fly ball outs. Offensively, the Flashes racked up 13 hits as a team against a usually stout Purdue pitching staff, as seniors Jimmy Rider and David Lyon each tallied three-hit games. Clean-up hitter George Roberts also continued his strong postseason with a clutch three-RBI game.
Kent State will now await the winner of Kentucky and Purdue's elimination game for a Saturday evening tilt at 8:00 pm EST. With a win there, the Flashes would punch their ticket to next week's Super Regionals. Due to the fact that Kent State has not yet lost a game however, a defeat on Sunday would set up a winner-take-all game on Monday evening.

The Dayton Flyers are making an early exit from the NCAA Regional World Series. They lost their opener to the No. 1 seeded Texas A&M Aggies by a score of 4-1, and got a bit of bad luck by having a tough opponent in the losers bracket. The TCU Horned Frogs, who finished their season 36-20, absolutely dominated the Flyers from start to finish of their game.
After a scoreless first inning from both schools, TCU jumped ahead with four runs in the second inning, which Dayton matched in the third with four of their own. TCU added two more in the fourth, and when Dayton took the lead in the fifth with four more of their own, the gloves came off.
Burny Mitchem was burned for four runs in the sixth inning, and his replacement, Parker Schrage, didn't fare much better. All-in-all, seven runs were allowed in the sixth. It didn't get much easier in the seventh though, as TCU added on six more. Dayton went scoreless in innings six, seven and eight, while TCU apparently took a break in the eighth.
At this point, TCU is up on Dayton 19-9 heading into the top of the ninth. Naturally, TCU piled it on with nine runs in the inning, finishing with 28 runs off of 23 hits. That's right - they had more runs than hits in this one by a decent margin. Dayton added three more runs in the ninth but it wasn't enough. The final score was 28-12 for TCU.
They're now eliminated - their season coming to an end with a 31-30 overall record.

The Kent State Golden Flashes needed more than double the time to win their first game in the double-elimination NCAA Regional tournament on Friday, beating the Kentucky WIldcats 7-6 in 21 innings. That effort earned Kent State (42-17) a matchup with the No. 1 seeded Purdue Boilermakers (45-12) on Saturday night in the winners bracket.
Due to the Kent State and Kentucky marathon, the Boilermakers had to wait until 10:40 p.m. to start their game, but then took care of business, beating the No. 4 seeded Valparaiso Crusaders, 7-2. Starting pitcher Joe Haase went seven innings to keep the Boilers bullpen fresh for Saturday's game. Purdue expects to start senior right-hander Lance Breedlove.
Kent State had to use five pitchers to make it through their wild game with Kentucky so the Golden Flashes will have to battle through the fatigue and hope for strong effort on the hill from junior right-hander Ryan Bores.
The winner of this game advances to the Regional championship game on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. while the loser will have to win an elimination game against the Valparaiso/Kentucky winner at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday to advance to the championship game.
Here's the info for Saturday's game:

The Dayton Flyers try to keep their season alive on Saturday when they face the TCU Horned Frogs in the NCAA Regional at College Stations, TX. The Flyers and Horned Frogs meet in the losers bracket of the double-elimination regional tournament after both teams lost their opener on Friday.
Dayton fell to the No. 1 seeded Texas A&M Aggies 4-1, while No. 2 seeded TCU dropped a 6-2 game to Ole Miss. The Flyers (31-29) face a tough challenge to avoid elimination against the talented Frogs (36-20) who will turn to strong pitching prospect Andrew Mitchell (5-3) to keep their season alive. Mitchell hasn't lived up to expectations this season and struggled last week in the Mountain West Conference tournament. The Flyers will turn to senior right-hander Tim Bury (8-2) to try to shut down the TCU offense.
Here's the info for Saturday's game:
WHEN: Saturday, June 2, 2012

The Dayton Flyers made a valiant effort to rally late, but couldn't generate enough offense when it counted as Texas A&M took the Regional-opening game by a 4-1 score.
The Flyers fell down right away after the Aggies chipped in a run in the first inning, and quickly followed that up by giving a pair of runs over the next three frames. Dayton continued to struggle to get into a rhythm from the plate entering the middle half of the game, as Texas A&M starter Michael Wacha reeled off 7.1 consecutive scoreless innings before giving way to the bullpen.
Dayton senior pitcher Mike Hauschild scattered nine hits over seven innings to pick up the loss, and walked four batters in a start where his command was spotty throughout. Vital Flyers freshman first baseman A.J. Ryan, slotted in the No. 5 spot, finished 0-for-4 from the plate in his first NCAA Tournament game.
Stuck in Saturday's elimination game against TCU, the Flyers will hope to produce more than just six hits offensively with their 2012 season hanging in the balance.

In one of the longest, most exciting college baseball games in recent memory, the Kent State Golden Flashes pulled off the upset and outlasted the Kentucky Wildcats in 21 innings by a 7-6 score in Friday's Regional opener.
Officially the second longest baseball game in NCAA tourney history, the two teams battled it out on the field for nearly seven hours. In addition to tallying 38 hits from the plate and 47 strikeouts from the mound, the Wildcats and Flashes each gave fans a series of nail-biting scenarios throughout extra innings where runs seemed to be an absolute certainty. And yet even when it looked like the game would end, an improbable set of circumstances would arise and ensure that another inning would somehow be in the cards.
Offensively, George Roberts and Jimmy Rider each led the way for Kent State from the dish. Roberts finished 5-for-10 with a pair of RBI, while Rider ended the night 4-for-10 from the plate. Aside from an 0-for-6 night from catcher Danny Lyon, the Flashes had no trouble making solid contact with the ball throughout. In the end, though, it was pitcher Michael Clark who picked up the win for the Flashes after pitching 3.2 innings of scoreless ball.
After playing the equivalent of more than two baseball games, it will be interesting to see how fatigue impacts these two clubs going forward in the tournament. The Golden Flashes will move on to play the winner of Purdue vs. Valaparaiso (which was delayed due to the length of this game) in Saturday's winner's game, while Kentucky will face the loser in a must-win situation earlier in the day.

The Kent State Golden Flashes capped off a 41-17 campaign with yet another Mid-American Conference title in impressive fashion over the weekend, and were promptly given a No. 3 seed and shipped off to a dangerous Gary Regional to kick off the college baseball postseason.
In addition to the Big Ten champion and No. 1 seed Purdue Boilermakers, Kent State will also have to deal with a third-seeded Kentucky squad that won 43 games, and an upstart Valparaiso bunch that happens to playing extremely close to its own backyard.
While it might still be vital that the Flashes are able to avoid a loss in their first game, the double elimination format ensures that Kent State could very well have a chance to advance to the Super Regionals next week even with a loss to Kentucky to kick things off. If Kent State is not able to slide by the Wildcats, a date in Saturday's loser-goes-home match with the loser of game two would be on the horizon.
Here is the full Gary Regional schedule:
Game 1: No. 3 Kent State vs. No. 2 Kentucky, Friday June 1, 4:00 pm EST
Game 2: No. 1 Purdue vs. No. 4 Valparaiso, Friday June 1, 8:00 pm EST

The Dayton Flyers are making their first-ever trip to the NCAA regionals -- and they'll have a stiff test when they get there.
The Flyers, the No. 4 seed in the College Station Regional, were 31-28 on the season and 17-7 in the Atlantic-10. They earned a spot in the regionals thanks to their 3-0 win over Richmond in the A-10 championship.
They will take on No. 1 seed Texas A&M at 7:35 on Friday. The Aggies, who have made five straight NCAA Tournament appearances and who made a College World Series appearance last season, were 42-16 and 16-8 in the Big 12. The Aggies are the 15th winningest college baseball team of all time.
The No. 2 seed is TCU and No. 3 is Ole Miss. Those four will compete in a double-elimination tournament for a chance to advance to the Super Regionals, which begin June 8. The winner of that goes on to the College World Series in Omaha.
Dayton, which started the season just 2-9, leads the nation in stolen bases with 162. There are eight different players with at least 10 steals, including short stop Brian Blaski, who broke the school's single-season record this year with 35.
