Former Ohio Governor Ted Strickland Congratulates Kent State 'Zips' On CWS Win

Stay connected for news and updates

When politicians wade into the world of sports, if often results in awkwardness and embarrassment. Boston mayor Tom Menino recently referred to Kevin Garnett and Rajon Rondo as "KJ and Hondo." This is one example in a long line of blush-inducing mix-ups, and former Ohio governor Ted Strickland added to the canon on Monday night. Shortly after the Kent State Golden Flashes completed a dramatic 5-4 upset win over No. 1 Florida, Strickland fired off a tweet congratulating them on staying alive in the College World Series -- only Strickland directed his congratulatory note at the "Zips." The Zips are of course the nickname for Kent State's local rival in Akron. It was an unfortunate gaffe. A screenshot of the tweet after the jump:

The Zips will play the South Carolina Tigers in their next elimination game on Wednesday night.
