The Kent State Golden Flashes continued their strong post-season play on Saturday night, earning a spot in the championship game at the NCAA Tournament Gary Regional by knocking off the No. 1 seeded Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday night.
The Golden Flashes knocked out top Purdue pitcher Lance Breedlove with a 5-run second innning and then made the early lead hold up thanks to an impressive and much-needed pitching performance by Kent State right-hander Ryan Bores. After using five pitchers in 21 innings on Friday night to beat Kentucky, the complete-game win by Bores sets up Kent State with plenty of arms ready to go in the championship game.
Kent State will play the winner of the Purdue vs. Kentucky loser-out game played prior to the championship game on Sunday night. In the double-elimination format, Kent State will have a second chance if they lose on Sunday night, with a winner-take-all championship game on Monday night.
The winner of the Gary Regional will advance to play the winner of the Eugene Regional in a best 2 out of 3 games at the Super Regional, with a trip to the College World Series on the line.
