Nearly everything about Derek Lowe suggests that the 39-year-old is running on fumes. Except, of course, the two things that may matter most -- his ERA and his record.
Lowe will take the hill for the Cleveland Indians on Thursday as they go for their second sweep of the season over the Detroit Tigers.
Lowe leads the team in wins (7) and ERA (3.06) even though his peripheral stats tell a different story. He has the second-worst strikeouts-per-nine-innings rate in the American League (2.66), as well as the AL's tenth-worst WHIP (1.46). But for whatever reason it hasn't seemed to matter. After getting knocked around for eight earned runs on May 26, he bounced back with a 6.2-inning, one-run performance on June 1.
The Indians have moved to within 0.5 games of the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central, and 5.5 games ahead of third-place Detroit.
First pitch Thursday is scheduled for 1:05 Eastern.
