Kyrie Irving Injury Update: Byron Scott Reports Irving Feeling Good With Eye On Training Camp

Cleveland Cavaliers coach Byron Scott reports that point guard Kyrie Irving is recovering well from offseason hand surgery and ready to join his teammates in Cleveland for the start of training camp.

"I told him, ‘I don't think you're gonna be playing (right away),'" Scott said, smiling. "But he said the hand is doing great. It's a lot better than most people probably expected at this point. So you could tell on the phone he's getting anxious and ready to start. That's a good thing."

Irving appears determined to not let his summer setback keep hold up his play or the development of the young Cavaliers team around him. The NBA rookie of the year will be leading a backcourt that may include another rookie, if shooting guard Dion Waiters adjusts to the NBA game like Cleveland expects.

Kyrie Irving Injury Update: Cavs Point Guard Expects To Be Back For Training Camp

Kyrie Irving's hand injury was the low point of the Cleveland Cavaliers' offseason, but all indications have been that the star point guard will be back fully healthy for training camp. The latest confirmation comes from Irving himself, who over the weekend spoke with Cavs blog Stepien Rules and said that he is on track to be back on the court come camp:

"My hand's alright. I've had the surgery, and I'm just rehabbing right now. The way it happened was a freak accident, it wasn't an anger play or anything like that. It was just like dang, I messed up, and slapped the wall. I'll be back on the court by September 1st, and I'll be 150-percent by the start of the season".

Kyrie Irving Injury: Cleveland Cavaliers Guard Undergoes Successful Surgery

On Wednesday, Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving underwent successful surgery at the Cleveland Clinic on his fractured right hand, according to the Cavaliers official website. Irving sustained the self-inflicted injury during a Summer League practice, when he made contact with a padded wall when he either slapped or hit it.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Thomas Graham and Cavaliers Head Team Physician Dr. Richard Parker. Irving is expected to be ready for the start of training camp, which will begin in September, but otherwise the Cavaliers did not release a time-table for his recovery (early reports predicted that he would miss 6-8 weeks).

Irving will be coming off an impressive first season in the NBA averaging 18.5 points, 5.4 assists and 30.5 minutes per game, which saw him named as the league's Rookie of the Year.

Kyrie Irving Injury: Cleveland Cavaliers Guard To Undergo Surgery Wednesday

On Monday night, the Cleveland Cavaliers announced via the team's official website that reigning NBA Rookie of the Year, Kyrie Irving was going to undergo surgery on Wednesday at the Cleveland Clinic to repair a fractured bone in his right hand.

Irving sustained the injury on Saturday morning during a summer league practice in Las Vegas when he reportedly made contact with a padded wall and in the process sustained the self-inflicted injury. It has been reported that the guard will miss somewhere in the range of 6-8 weeks, but the Cavaliers would not officially committ to a time-table.

Via the Cavaliers:

His status will be updated as appropriate and he is still projected to be ready for the start of training camp at the end of September.

Kyrie Irving Injury: Cavs Point Guard To Have Hand Examined By Team Doctors Monday

Although he is expected to miss upwards of two months of action with a broken hand, Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving will meet with team doctors for the first time on Monday to better assess the severity of his injury.

The former No. 1 overall pick took to Twitter over the weekend to point out how it was a slapping motion and not a punching one that forced him to the sidelines during practice, but the fact that it was self-inflicted injury remains the biggest story. ''He was upset with himself and he took it out on the wall," Cavs head coach Byron Scott told reporters on Sunday. "The wall won, obviously.''

As far as Cleveland's Summer League squad goes, the Irving-less Cavs fell on Sunday in disheartening fashion after a last-second gaffe by rookie guard Dion Waiters. With the future of the franchise stuck on the bench for at least two months, and possibly even longer if team doctors discover a more serious injury, Cleveland looks to be a tad snakebit at the moment.

Kyrie Irving Injury Update: Point Guard Says He Didn't Punch Wall

Not that there's much of a difference when an injury like this sidelines you 6-8 weeks, but Kyrie Irving would like everyone to know that he denies one element of the story circulating the Internet.

To be clear, Irving slapped the wall, instead.

Whether this makes things better or worse is up to each individual, but the latest setback is starting to give Irving and injury-prone label. The Cavaliers point guard missed 14 games last season and played 11 games in his only season at Duke.

His durability will continue to be a question mark early in his NBA career.

Kyrie Irving Injury Update: Cavs Star To See Team Doctors In Cleveland Sunday

Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving will return to Cleveland to see Team Physicians Dr. Richard Parker and Dr.Thomas Graham Sunday for a second look at his fractured hand, according to a statement from the team.

As has been widely reported, Irving injured his right hand by slapping a padded wall in frustration during the team's practice in Las Vegas. It appears the second-year guard and defending NBA Rookie of the Year will need surgery on the hand, but he's expected to return by the start of Training Camp in late September.

The Cavs say they will update Irving's status after the former Duke guard is re-examined.

It's interesting to note that Indians pitcher Nick Hagadone also visited Dr. Graham at Cleveland Clinic Sports Health after punching a wall in frustration and injuring his hand.

Irving was off to a promising start to the summer after participating in Team USA's training camp in Las Vegas, but one would think he might've seen his last Summer League action.

Kyrie Irving Injury Update: Cavs Point Guard Breaks Hand, Will Need Surgery

The breaking news out of Las Vegas is hardly promising right now, as the Akron Beacon Journal's Jason Lloyd is reporting that Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving, spotted in a cast earlier in the day, has a fractured bone in his right hand and will need surgery.

According to Lloyd, Irving actually injured the hand in question by smacking the not-so-padded wall behind the basket in frustration after a turnover during practice. Seriously. Here's what Irving had to say about the freak injury:

"I’m a little disappointed for a freak accident like that. I have to be more responsible about my health. It was crazy. It happened so fast. That thing I did, hitting the padding on the wall, I’ve done it so many times. This time it was just a freak accident."

While this clearly signals the end of any upcoming basketball for a player who was legitimately starting to flourish in his first real pro summer, the scenario here isn't exactly the easiest thing for Cleveland fans to swallow right now. An awkward fall after an aggressive drive to the hoop or a rolled up ankle in the paint would have both been much, much easier to stomach. But a self-inflicted injury? That's just too much.

Irving is expected to miss six to eight weeks of action and should be back in time for the start of Cleveland's training camp, but this hardly alleviates the situation. A few days ago the Cavs owned the most promising young talent in pro basketball. And now, because of an extremely poor decision, he's on the shelf for the better part of two months.

Kyrie Irving Injury: Cavaliers Guard Reportedly Wearing Cast, Suspected To Have Broken Hand

Easily the most promising player on the USA Select Team, Cleveland guard Kyrie Irving's endless string of highlight reel plays might have to be put on hold for a little bit, as SLAM Magazine's Tzvi Twersky reported on Saturday that the talented guard was seen wearing a cast on his hand.

While no details have trickled out, this is clearly disconcerting news for the Cleveland Cavaliers and their fans. It's entirely possible that the cast was a precautionary measure for an injury not quite as serious as a broken hand, but it's hard not to fear the absolute worst right now as a Cleveland sports fan.

Irving recently made a public challenge to Team USA member Kobe Bryant for a 1-on-1 game with the proceeds going to charity, and truly appeared to be both gelling and flourishing alongside teammates this summer. Hopefully for everyone's sake the talented point guard is able to get back on the court as soon as possible.
