Cleveland Browns Training Camp: Scott Fujita Has Leg Injury

The Cleveland Browns are already without linebacker Scott Fujita for the first three games of the regular season, and now he's missing time in practice, as well. Fujita was one of about 15 players who did not practice on Monday, and not much was known about it other than what head coach Pat Shurmur said -- which wasn't much. Shumur simply said Fujita was sore.

Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland took to Twitter on Monday and noted that Fujita is sporting a black nylon wrap around his left leg. This is the first we've heard about a knee injury to Fujita, which likely means it's not very serious. With Fujita set to miss some time due to suspension anyway, the Browns don't need to panic as he sits to let his leg heal up. If it is just soreness, then the team will probably be cautious and hold him out as long as he thinks he needs.

That being said, the Browns are now very lacking at the linebacker position. With Chris Gocong out for the season, the Browns may be looking to add yet another linebacker just to have enough bodies at the position. Then again, Fujita may only need to miss one or two practices, making a roster move unlikely. We'll see what happens with this one.

Cleveland Browns Execs Served Notice For 2012 Season

A change in ownership can often mean wholesale changes in a franchise's front office, and that may soon be the case with the Cleveland Browns. According to Sports Illustrated's Peter King, new Browns owner Jimmy Haslam may be ready to shake things up come the end of the 2012 season.

King says that Haslam wants to "judge everyone fresh," and that no one in the front office should "feel secure beyond December." That could be bad news for Mike Holmgren, Tom Heckert and Pat Shurmur, who have been unable to change the losing tide in Cleveland. Of course, that trio still has the 2012 season to show marked improvement, and success in the NFL can often come when it's least expected.

Mohamed Massaquoi Injury Update: Browns WR Tweets He Didn't Suffer Concussion

Given his concussion history, it must have been a scary moment for Cleveland Browns wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi when he suffered a head injury during Friday's preseason game against the Detroit Lions. He was forced to leave the field of play and, after the game, Browns coach Pat Shurmur confirmed that Massaquoi had suffered a concussion, his third in three seasons.

In an odd twist, though, Massaquoi took to Twitter on Friday night to deny that he had suffered any ill effects from the hit.

It's hard to fault Massaquoi for wanting to get back on the field, but the team will obviously need to monitor his condition very carefully over the next few days and weeks. It's unclear at the moment if he'll miss any additional time.

Browns Vs. Lions: Shurmur Focuses On Positives From Brandon Weeden's Debut

The Cleveland Browns earned a 19-17 preseason win over the Detroit Lions in rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden's first NFL action.

The Browns' starting QB looked every bit the rookie during his three offensive drives on the field, however. Weeden finished completing three of nine passes for 62 yards and one interception. Coach Pat Shurmur elected to focus on the positives.

"I thought Brandon did a good job," Shurmur said at halftime. "It looked like the game was slow for him. He was out there and he executed pretty well. I think he would want that one back on the interception. It was in tight coverage. The ball was a pretty good ball and we've got to make that play. I think for the most part, he executed in a way that I thought he would."

Weeden did have a highlight throw among his spotty play, a 34-yard completion to rookie wide receiver Travis Benjamin. Dawgs By Nature took a closer look at the play, showing an impressive play from the two rookies.

Browns vs. Lions Analysis: Weeden, Young Browns Struggle to Victory

When the Cleveland Browns took the field against the Detroit Lions, all eyes figured to be on the offensive side of the ball as first round pick Brandon Weeden was set to make his pre-season debut.

The reviews for Weeden were mixed, but the positive way to put it after his performance on Saturday night is that there are definitely things to work on. Weeden completed just three of his nine passes and had an interception as well as a sack and fumble. Obviously, not a lot of positive coming from that, but he did average over 20 yards per completion with 62 yards passing.

It should come as no surprise that Colt McCoy was the most efficient of the Browns’ quarterbacks in terms of completion percentage, but Seneca Wallace threw the only touchdown of the night to Brad Smelley, the fullback.

Obviously, the Browns were without top draft choice Trent Richardson on the night, and not surprisingly, the running game struggled mightily. Every back who got playing time on Saturday finished with a rushing average of under four yards.

One of the biggest positives Browns fans have to take from this game is the play of the receivers and tight ends, specifically from guys whom they are going to need big contributions this year. Tight end Jordan Cameron flashed some big play ability with two receptions for 58 yards to lead the team, including a 42 yard play. His ability has always been there, but last year he wasn’t able to put it together on the field. The Browns are counting on him to play a bigger role this season and give them a dynamic receiver/tight end on the outside who can make plays in the red zone.

One player who looked pretty solid on the night was rookie Travis Benjamin, who caught two of the three passes thrown his way and made some big plays just like he used to at Miami. Benjamin has the speed to get downfield, and he showed it off by catching two passes for 46 yards. He is a bright spot also for this Browns’ receiving group, and I think he may be one of the most versatile pass catchers they have. Obviously the team is counting on big things from second round picks Greg Little and Josh Gordon, but Benjamin was a high draft pick in his own right, and though he is smaller, they are going to need him to step up and be a big play type of guy. He also showed he can be a pretty good kick returner, averaging over 27 yards on two returns.

Speaking of Josh Gordon and Greg Little, they combined for zero catches on four targets. A lot of that had to do with the quarterback play and lack of chemistry between them all, but I think those are really disappointing numbers. You’ve got to get at least one ball and get some reps and make these pre-season games count, especially if you are Josh Gordon.

Nenvertheless, being down 10-17 for much of the fouth quarter, the Browns were able to mount a late rally and beat the Lions with an Adonis Thomas touchdown and a game-winning 45-yard field goal by Jeff Wolfert, who is auditioning essentially for other teams with Phil Dawson back on the Browns’ roster.

What you should take from the game is this—the Browns are young, they are going to struggle their way through a lot of games this year, but they have some promise. There are young playmakers on this team that make up the foundation for the future, and I think the second game will be much better overall statistically than this one for some of the more prominent young guys like Weeden, Gordon, and Little.

Injury Update

Mohammed Massaquoi suffered a concussion after his first catch from Weeden early in the game. Hopefully he rests up this next game and gets himself right for the regular season, because he can be a valuable playmaker when he is healthy.

Browns Vs. Lions Final Score: Late Field Goal Gives Cleveland 19-17 Win In Preseason Opener

The Cleveland Browns won their 2012 preseason opener 19-17 on Friday night at Ford Field courtesy of a Jeff Wolfert 45-yard field goal with just 28 seconds left in the game. The Browns, who trailed 14-3 at halftime, outscored Detroit 16-3 in the second half to earn the exhibition win.

Rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden was just three for nine in his limited work, passing for 62 yards and also being picked off once. Back-up Colt McCoy was six of eight for 88 yards in the game, but was sacked twice.

The win is tempered by the loss of wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi, who had to leave the game after one play with a head injury after being hit high as he attempted to catch a Weeden pass.

Browns Vs. Lions Score: Cleveland Trails 14-3 At Halftime

The 2012 preseason opener for the Cleveland Browns has been a struggle so far, with the team mustering just three points on offense while also losing wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi to a head injury on his first play.

Massaquoi was hit high on the first throw from rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden and had to exit the game. Weeden completed just three of nine passes for 62 yards in his preseason debut, also tossing an interception. Colt McCoy has replaced Weeden in the game, and is six for eight for 88 yards.

The only points of the game for the Browns have come courtesy of a Phil Dawson 37-yard field goal. Cleveland has also been flagged eight times in the first half for 55 yards.

Mohamed Massaquoi Injury Update: Browns Wide Receiver Exits Game With Head Injury

The 2012 preseason is off to a rough start for Cleveland wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi, who suffered a head injury on his first play. Via the team's official twitter feed:

Massaquoi, who has had problems with concussions in his NFL career, was hit high on his first pass from rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden. The Cleveland wideout was concussed by Steelers linebacker James Harrison two years ago, a vicious hit that seemed to propel NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to modify the rules of contact midway through the season.
