London Olympics Recap: Ohio Produces Six 2012 Medalists

The state of Ohio was responsible for six of Team USA's medals at the 2012 Olympics in London. Here's a rundown of the medalists:

  • Kayla Harrison, Middletown, Ohio: Harrison, of course, won the U.S.' first ever Olympic gold in judo, when she topped the 78-kg division. The 22-year-old Harrison, who won the 2010 world championships in that same category, was competing in her first Olympics.
  • LeBron James, Akron, Ohio: James capped off his historic 2012 with his second straight Olympic gold in men's basketball. Along with Carmelo Anthony and David Robinson, James is the only American men's basketball player to medal three times. As of now, James plans to compete in the 2016 games in Brazil.
  • Abby Johnston, Columbus, Ohio: Along with Kelci Bryant, Johnston won silver in diving in synchronized 3m springboard. For the 22-year-old Johnston, who attended Duke, it was her first Olympics.
  • Tianna Madison, Elyria, Ohio: Madison competed in two events at this year's games. In the individual 100m, Madison just missed out on a medal by finishing in fourth. But she won gold in running the first leg of the women's record-breaking 4x100m relay team.
  • Nick Thoman, Cincinnati, Ohio: Thoman, the backstroke specialist, won silver at this year's games in the 100m backstroke, coming in second behind fellow American Matt Grevers. This was Thoman's first Olympics.
  • Jacob Wukie, Oak Harbor, Ohio: Wukie took home a silver medal along with Brady Ellison and Jake Kaminski in men's team archery. It was Wukie's first Olympics.
