Browns Safety David Sims Could Take Roster Spot From Usama Young

As safety Usama Young continues to deal with hamstring problems, David Sims is making a strong case for a roster spot.

Sims went undrafted in 2011 out of Iowa State and was signed and released by the New York Giants and Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season. He was signed by the Browns in January and has impressed in camp and preseason games.

In two preseason games, Sims has five tackles and two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown. His play has drawn high praise from the coaches, according to ESPNCleveland.com:

"I think he's flashed for the coaches, too," said coach Pat Shurmur. "He's challenging, he's physical and he's really made a huge amount of progress in the time we've been together.

"I'm hopeful that it'll continue in the next two preseason games. That's the kind of thing you want to see for a guy to make the team. He's got to flash and got to make plays. To his credit, he's done that."
