Ubaldo Jimenez, Rafael Perez shut down by Indians

The Cleveland Indians are nearing the end of another disappointing season, and have shut down Ubaldo Jimenez and Rafael Perez.

The Cleveland Indians put an end to both Ubalo Jimenez and Rafael Perez's season on Wednesday, according to Ohio.com. Perez had a nagging shoulder injury all season, and with the team out of the running for the AL Central and the postseason overall, the Tribe shut him down and got him in for surgery on Wednesday.

"Rafael underwent surgery to debride his left shoulder," Indians head trainer Lonnie Soloff said. "Dr. Craig Morgan cleaned out the back aspect of the joint. It was a 30-minute procedure. Raffy can initiate a throwing program in two months and is expected to be ready for spring training."

The reason the Indians elected to wait until the end of the season to schedule this surgery? Shoulder injuries are complicated, with a tough healing process that has a lower rate of success than, say, elbow surgery. The Tribe simply limited Perez and kept his pitch count as low as they could, but he still required the operation.

Jimenez will not require surgery, but he complained of soreness in his last two starts and was shut down. He's lost 17 games this season and clearly needs some time to recuperate and get back to winning form after such a down year. Jeanmar Gomez will take Jimenez's start against the Kansas City Royals on Saturday, while Zach McAllister or Corey Kluber will get the nod on Sunday.
