Andy Roddick lost to No. 7 Juan Martin Del Potro, 6-7(1), 7-6(4), 6-2, 6-4, on Wednesday afternoon in what was to be the final match of the popular American's tennis career. Roddick was aggressive to start the match but appeared to tire with each progressive match, becoming overwhelmed in the crucial third set and failing to take advantage of several opportunities in the fourth.
He would address the crowd with a tearful goodbye, as Roddick had announced he would retire following the conclusion of the 2012 U.S. Open.
Earlier in the day No. 3 Maria Sharapova survived an early scare against No. 11 Marion Bartoli, losing the first set before taking the second and third sets. Sharapova will face No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in the Women's Semifinals, who defeated No. 7 Samantha Stosur on Tuesday.
In other men's matches, No. 2 Novak Djokovic easily defeated No. 18 Stanislas Wawrinka and will take on Juan Martin Del Potro in the Men's Quarterfinals.
