Stay connected for news and updates

Cleveland Browns running back Trent Richardson was excused from practice Friday to be with his girlfriend for the birth of their son, according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

"It will not affect his game status. I expect him to play," Browns coach Pat Shurmur told Cabot.

The baby is the third child for Richardson and his girlfriend, Sevina. They also have two daughters.

Richardson has rushed for 222 yards on 64 carries. He's also caught 15 passes for 122 yards. He has three rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown. Richardson's best game came in a week two loss to the Cincinnati Bengals when he ran for 109 yards and a touchdown and had 36 receiving yards and a touchdown. He has not surpassed 50 yards on the ground in any of his other games this season.

The Browns play the New York Giants at 1 p.m. Sunday. Cleveland comes into the game at 0-4 and the Giants are 2-2.
