NFL Draft Rumors: Browns Wanted Kendall Wright Over Brandon Weeden At No. 22

The Cleveland Browns selected their quarterback of the future with their second Round 1 pick on Thursday night, drafting Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden 22nd overall. But, according to reports, the Browns were poised to take Baylor wide receiver Kendall Wright at that spot, before the Tennessee Titans jumped out and grabbed the speedy wideout at No. 20. Via Mary Kay Cabot:

The Browns would've selected Baylor wide receiver Kendall Wright at No. 22 over quarterback Brandon Weeden if he had been there, and told Colt McCoy on draft day that they weren't going to draft a quarterback in the first round, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported.

So, once Wright came off the board, did the Browns hastily decide to change the course of the franchise in the sport's most important position in just a matter of minutes? Not necessarily -- Tom Heckert has made it clear that the Browns, from top to bottom in the organization, were enamored with Weeden, and were considering trading up into the end of the 1st round to get their quarterback. It may have been a reach, however, at No. 22 but Heckert is insisting that Weeden can be the starter for the Browns, which leaves Colt McCoy likely on the trading block.
