Colt McCoy Reacts To Brandon Weeden Being Named Browns Starting Quarterback

Browns head coach Pat Shurmur spoke with the media after practice on Monday and announced Brandon Weeden as the starting quarterback for Friday's first preseason game and beyond. Shumur said he informed all three quarterbacks in the running for the job this morning. Colt McCoy, the incumbent starter, spent the offseason watching the Browns try to trade up for the rights to Robert Griffin III and then flirt with a number of free agent quarterbacks. Tom Heckert and company then took Weeden with the No. 22 pick at the end of April, putting McCoy behind the eight-ball.

McCoy spoke after practice as well after the news went public, and he was clearly not pleased with how things shook out. He cast doubt upon the idea that it was an open competition coming into camp, via Mary Kay Cabot of The Plain Dealer:

"I have not taken any snaps with the first group," McCoy said. "I thought coming in it would be a competition."

The writing has been on the wall for awhile, but this still had to come as blow to McCoy so early in camp. He was professional about it and did tell the media he will continue to approach things as if he's the starter. McCoy was the subject of trade rumors immediately after the Draft but he did not comment when asked if he'll seek a trade.
