The polls are closed, yet fans will still get a chance to pick a final all-star from each league
For those of you who like an interactive experience, here is a little treat via MLB.com.
You will be able to hover over starters, reserves, players by team in the game, all players at a particular position, etc.
Very cool.
The 2011 All-Star game will take place in Arizona on Tuesday night at 8 on Fox. Of course, the winning league will acquire home field advantage for the World Series. And although a player for the Astros might not care who wins, and maybe a player for the Royals (both teams would have to be considered long-shots to no-shots to make the playoffs), even so the pride factor should come into play.
For all those who bothered to show up and not beg off, that is.
Asdrubal Cabrera is where he belongs. Cabrera will start at short stop for the American League at Tuesday NIght’s Major League Baseball All-Star Game after Derek Jeter, voted to the starting spot by the fans, pulled out of the game due to injury. Jeter returned earlier this week from a 3-week stint on the disabled list with a calf injury. Jeter has also been worn down by his quest for 3000 hits.
“Unfortunately I won’t be able to go,” the Yankees captain said on Friday. “It’s just a situation where after talking with Joe and Cash and Geno, it’d probably be best not to try to push it. Because it’s most important to be ready for the second half. That’s what my focus has to be at. It’s unfortunate because I know you guys know how much I enjoy going to All-Star games. I love playing in All-Star games. Especially getting voted in by the fans, it’s something I would like to do but I’ll try to be smart about it. I know I can be stubborn a lot of times when it comes to injuries, but I’m going to try to be smart about it.”
It will likely be welcome news for Cabrera, who is having a career year both offensively and defensively, including two gold-glove caliber plays earlier this week against the New York Yankees in a 5-3 Indians win.
Cabrera will be joined in Arizona by Tribe closer Chris Perez
Paul Konerko of the Chicago White Sox and Shane Victorino of the Philadelphia Phillies were added to the American and National League All-Star squads, respectively, as a "Final Vote" was completed and tabulated to fill in the last member of each team.
Victorino received 9.2 million fan votes to easily make the NL team, and outdistanced the Dodgers’ Andre Ethier, the Rockies’ Todd Helton, the Nationals’ Michael Morse, and the Diamondbacks’ Ian Kennedy.
Konerko prevailed in a close race for the final AL spot, beating out a hard-charging Victor Martinez of the Tigers. Also in the pool of five players to choose from were Alex Gordon of the Royals, Adam Jones of the Orioles and the Rays’ Ben Zobrist.
The All-Star game will take place next Tuesday in Arizona. Game time will be at 8:00 eastern time.
The starters and reserves for the American and National League All-Star teams have been announced, and two Indians have made the AL squad, although not as starters.
Asdrubal Cabrera was named as a reserve infielder with Chris Perez also joining the pitching staff of the AL Stars.
Here is a complete look at the rosters for each side. One player will be added to each club this coming Thursday, after both managers present fans with five choices for a final vote:
