Stay connected for news and updates

The Cleveland Indians traveled to Toronto to open the second half of the season. And a fine start the half it was as Justin Masterson and the bullpen combined to shutout the Blue Jays and hold onto a 1-0 win.

Masterson pitched seven innings, striking out five and walking one while allowing only five hits. It was his sixth win of the season, putting him at 6-8 with a 4.14 ERA. Vinnie Pestano came in to work the eighth for his 24th hold of the season. Chris Perez retired the side for his 25th save of the year.

Travis Hafner was the sole source of offense in the game. He smacked his eighth home run of the season in the second inning off Ricky Romero.

Romero took the loss, his fifth of the season. He struck out six and walked two in six innings of work.

Cleveland will try again on Saturday behind Ubaldo Jimenez. That game is scheduled to start at 1:07 p.m. Eastern.
