Derek Lowe Released By Cleveland Indians

On Friday afternoon, the Cleveland Indians officially announced that the club has released right-handed starting pitcher Derek Lowe. The move comes a little over a week after the 39-year old pitcher was designated for assignment.

Lowe was acquired by the Indians in a trade with the Atlanta Braves last October that sent minor league left-hand reliever Chris Jones the other way.

During his time in Cleveland, Lowe assembled a record of 8-10 with a 5.52 ERA in 119 innings pitched.

After jumping out to a 6-1 start to his year, the aging pitcher began to struggle, especially in the month of July where he amassed a record of 1-4.

Lowe has recorded one win in his last ten starts and has a combined record of 1-7 over that span (in addition to receiving a loss in his last four consecutive starts with the Indians).

Cleveland Indians Release Johnny Damon

After being designated for assignment earlier in the week, Johnny Damon was officially released by the Cleveland Indians on Thursday, Major League Baseball confirmed.

Damon played in 64 games for the Indians this season. He hit .222 with four home runs and 19 RBI.

The 38-year old is expected to try to continue his career elsewhere. At 2,769 career hits, he could have a chance at 3,000 if he can hang around in the league for a few more seasons.

If this is the end of the line for Damon, his last hit was a single off of Luke Hochevar on July 31 when the Indians fell to the Kansas City Royals, 8-3.

Johnny Damon Designated For Assignment By Cleveland Indians

On Friday, the Cleveland Indians announced that outfielder Johnny Damon was designated for assignment and that the club had recalled outfielder Ezequiel Carrera from the minor leagues.

Damon played in 64 games with the Tribe in 2012, amassing a .222 batting average with six doubles, two triples, four home runs and 19 RBI.

Carrera has been performing well as a member of the Columbus Clippers and was recently named the team's player of the week in addition to being named the International league player of the week.

Via the Indians official website:

Carrera, 25, hit .515 (17-33) with 2 doubles, 2 triples, 2 HR and 13 RBI throughout the week, while posting a 1.407 OPS (.528 on-base pct, .879 slugging pct.).
