The Ohio State Buckeyes continued their perfect season Saturday with a victory over UAB, 29-15.
The Buckeyes were down early, 9-0, but staged a slow, steady comeback behind the effort of quarterback Braxton Miller and pulled ahead late in the first half. The slow start and subsequent comeback was business as usual for the Buckeyes, writes Chris Kopech on SB Nation's Ohio State blog, Land Grant Holy Land.
The 2012 iteration of the Ohio State Buckeyes football team is nothing if not consistent. They start slow but eventually pick up the pace and distance themselves from their opponent. They have holes on offense that are filled by athletic ability and skill. The defense has issues tackling but makes enough big hits and creates enough turnovers to mask the ill effects of such play. The team has yet to reach its potential, but got out of the Horseshoe with another win.
Ohio State scored two touchdowns with under two minutes remaining the first half to take their first lead of the game, and they never looked back. Miller led the way for Ohio State with 143 yards passing and 64 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
Ohio State takes their perfect record into a tough road test next week at No. 21 Michigan State.

The UAB Blazers were game, but couldn't finish enough drives to pull off the potential road upset Saturday afternoon against the Ohio State Buckeyes, who won 29-15.
Buckeyes quarterback Braxton Miller scored two rushing touchdowns, the second of which came in the fourth quarter to essentially put the game away. He then ran in a two-point conversion to give the Buckeyes their biggest lead of the game, at 14.
After a scoreless third quarter, UAB's Ty Long kicked a 34-yard field goal in the fourth to cut Ohio State's lead to 21-15. Long missed a 46-yard field goal attempt on the next drive that would've brought the Blazers to within three.
The Buckeyes (4-0) didn't take the lead until late in the first half. Zach Boren had a 2-yard rushing touchdown to make it 21-12 with 37 seconds left in the half. The touchdown came after the Buckeyes recovered a UAB fumble deep in Blazers territory. Ohio State took its first lead lead just over a minute prior on a 12-yard rushing touchdown by Miller. The extra point put the Buckeyes up, 14-12.
UAB got out to a 9-0 lead before the Buckeyes finally scored with 6:31 left in the first half, when Rod Smith got in the end zone on a 1-yard run that capped a 10-play, 75-yard drive.
The Blazers led 6-0 after the first quarter. They opened the scoring with 9:24 to play in the first when Cortez Webb blocked the punt of Ohio State's Ben Buchanan, allowing UAB wide receiver Nick Adams to recover and return it 20 yards for a Blazers touchdown. Long missed the extra point, but made up for with two long field goals. UAB extended its lead to 9-0 with 9:27 left in the half on a 47-yard field goal by Long, and then again to 12-7 on a 54-yard field goal with 3:44 left.
Box Score Hero: Miller didn't put up gaudy numbers, but he scored two big rushing touchdowns to help cement the game. He completed 12 of 20 passes for 143 yards while rushing for 64 yards on 11 carries.
Rankings Ramifications: Ohio State probably didn't impress any voters who watched, but the team shouldn't move too far in one direction or the other from its No. 16 perch.
But Did They Cover? Cold comfort for Blazers fans, but UAB easily covered the 36 points Ohio State was favored by. The game stayed under the over/under line of 57.5.

Next Week's Schedule: This was a tuneup for the Buckeyes, who have to travel to play the Michigan State Spartans next week (Sept. 29) in one of the biggest early Big Ten games of the season. UAB will look for its first win of the season next weekend at home against Tulsa.

The Ohio St. Buckeyes went without defensive end Nathan Williams in Week 2 against Central Florida, after he left the game against Miami University in Week 1. Williams was reportedly out after feeling some soreness in his right knee, believed to be some after-effects of his microfracture surgery. As it turns out, that's not the case, according to Bill Rabinowitz of The Columbus Dispatch.
It turns out that the effects of the microfracture surgery didn't keep him out of the Central Florida game. Early in the Miami game, Williams was hit in the knee by the helmet of a Miami running back.
Williams returned in Week 3 against the California Golden Bears and played 60-plus snaps. Now, facing a much easier matchup against the UAB Blazers on Saturday, Williams says he's 100 percent and ready to return. There still may be some adjustment period, but it would be more due to rust and not due to any kind of knee injury.
The Buckeyes hope that Williams will be a big factor on the defensive side of the ball. He's got some excellent pass-rushing moves and he's used all over the defensive line. They're clearly a better team when he's playing, so it's good to see that he believes he's 100 percent heading into this game against unranked UAB, in which the Buckeyes are significant favorites.

With a 3-0 start to the season, not only are Urban Meyer and the Ohio State Buckeyes looking like the class of the Big 10, it’s looking like they have a Heisman Trophy candidate on their hands.
Even after Miller’s quick start in the team’s first couple of games, I don’t know that anyone expected he would garner Heisman attention. Now, Miller ranks as high as third on some Heisman watch lists, and comes in at fourth on ESPN’s latest rankings behind only Geno Smith (WVU), DeAnthony Thomas (Oregon), and Johnathan Franklin (UCLA).
Miller has seven passing touchdowns to go along with five rushing touchdowns, and not only has he markedly improved as a passer this year compared to last, but he is also fifth in the nation in rushing yards with 377 through three games.
The sophomore signal caller has been a fantastic fit for Urban Meyer’s offense, and he’s making the players around him better. He’s clearly the focal point of the offense, but he’s getting some other guys national attention as well.
The Buckeyes are 16th in the AP top 25 poll, and with one more “warm up” game against UAB, they face a tough slate of games starting with Michigan State and Nebraska. If Miller can continue on this pace, he will definitely be in the thick of the Heisman race at the end of the season.
After three games, Ohio St. coach Urban Meyer feels quarterback Braxton Miller is running too much. Instead, he would prefer for Miller to take more shots in the passing game. Said Meyer:
"I came out and said it's too much (running), it's too much.
He added,
"I think we have to take shots. Defenses are forcing us to do that. That's bad coaching [by us]. We've got to do more of that because they're defending the run."
Through three contests, Miller has managed 377 rushing yards on 56 carries, including five touchdowns. He averages 6.7 yards per carry, which is better than any of the team's running backs.
But Meyer is leery of becoming too dependent on Miller's legs, saying,
"You go into the game saying he can really help you win the game with his feet, but you have to then be cautious of how often you ask him to do that, too."

Jordan Hall will be the starting running back for Ohio State against UAB on Saturday, according to an update from Luke Zimmerman at Land-Grant Holyland.
Hall, who returned last weekend from a foot injury, replaces heralded freshman Bri'onte Dunn on the depth chart. Dunn was listed as the No. 1 back last Saturday against California, but ended up receiving zero carries.
Some suspected that the Buckeyes would ease Hall back into action, but after a 17-carry performance against Cal, it appears he is their top running back. Quarterback Braxton Miller handled the rest of the rushing load, carrying the ball 12 times.
The only other change to the Ohio State depth chart is Storm Klein, who replaces Camren Williams as a backup middle linebacker.
The Buckeyes take on UAB at noon ET Saturday.

The Ohio State Buckeyes will be without running back Carlos Hyde again on Saturday, but he's improving and the team faces a relatively easy matchup against the UAB Blazers this week.
