Browns Sign Punter Maynard After McGee Goes On IR

Well, that didn’t last long. Richmond McGee, after one of the worst displays of punting I’ve ever seen in Week One, has been placed on injured reserve with a herniated disc.

McGee reportedly suffered the injury during warmups, according to the Plain Dealer.

The poor punting was a definite factor in Sunday’s loss to the Bengals. PD beat writer Tony Grossi said:

↵
↵McGee was booed by the Browns’ crowd when he shanked his first punt for 20 yards. He also had punts of 28 and 30 yards and finished with a gross average of 36.0 on eight punts.↵
↵

In typical Browns fashion, though, the team signed Brad Maynard, who…wait for it…had the lowest punting gross average in the NFL in 2010 with the Chicago Bears (40.1 yards). It is obvious that Cleveland does not have a lot of room for error this season, and special teams are going to play a big part. If Maynard cannot get it done, the Browns have to keep looking until they find someone who can.
