Fresh off a promising eight-win regular season, Dave Clawson's Bowling Green Falcons will make their first postseason appearance in three years on Thursday against the San Jose St. Spartans in the 2012 Military Bowl.
Facing a San Jose State program that racked up 10 wins and checked in at No. 24 in the final BCS standings, the Falcons will need to rely on a defense that ranked No. 8 in the country with just 15.8 points allowed per game. Bowling Green posted a 4-2 mark against the spread away from home during the year, and failed to cover in each of their four losses. The Spartans, on the other hand, did not lose a game at an opponent's field in six opportunities, and will bring an offense that averages an impressive 35.3 points per game.
One of the lowest-scoring teams in the bowl field this year, the Falcons have finished under the total projected over/under number in 10 of their 11 Division 1-A games. Despite Bowling Green's proclivity for getting into defensive slugfests, all four of the previous favorites in Military Bowl history have gone on to win the game straight up.
