2012 MAC Football Standings: Northern Illinois tops conference with 12-1 overall record

MACtion is over for the 2012 season, but a bevy of bowl games should keep fans entertained through the holiday season.

The Mid-American Conference football season is over, and the Northern Illinois Huskies are the champions after beating the Kent St. Golden Flashes in the conference title game Friday night. With a 12-1 overall record and wins over quality foes like Toledo and Ball State, Northern Illinois is bringing MACtion to the BCS after accepting an Orange Bowl bid.

Kent State still finishes the season with an impressive 11-2 record, but the Golden Flashes will likely fall far down the bowl season schedule after losing the MAC title game. A win presumably would've given Kent State the Orange Bowl bid that ultimately went to NIU, but the Huskies held on in double overtime.

Four other schools -- Ball State, Toledo, Ohio and Bowling Green -- all finish the regular season with respective overall records of 8-4 or better. The bowl games that are slotted for MAC teams include the Little Caesars Bowl, Famous Idaho Potato Bowl and GoDaddy.com Bowl.
