The Kentucky Derby will run for the 138th time Saturday at Churchill Downs in Louisville, with Union Rags the favorite to win at 9-2 odds. Creative Cause and Hansen are also popular choices with their odds at 8-1.
The Kentucky Derby, run at Churchill Downs, is the first leg of the Triple Crown and has a $2 million purse. The thoroughbred race is held on a left-handed, dirt track of 10 furloughs.
Union Rags, a three-year old Colt from the Chadd Ford Stable, most recently finished a disappointing third at the Florida Derby, beaten by nearly 1 and 1/4 lengths. He will be ridden by jockey Julien Leparoux in the Run of the Roses.
Creative Cause has raced three times this year, including a third-place finish in the San Vincente Stakes and a 3/4 of a length victory over Bodemeister in the San Felipe Stakes. Most recently, the Colt finished second to I'll Have Another in the Santa Anita Derby.
Hansen won the 2011 Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs by a nose over Union Rags.
