With the most of the leaders hovering around par, American Michael Thompson is in the clubhouse at four-under-par, currently three strokes better than any other golfer at the U.S. Open.
Thompson had an eventful first round, notching seven birdies and three bogeys in the first 18 holes. He is ranked No. 107 on the PGA Tour Money List.
With many golfers still on the course, Thompson's day has been unrivaled. There are five golfers at one-under par, including Tiger Woods and David Toms, who are both finished for the day.
Masters winner Bubba Watson did not fare as well in the first round, shooting eight-over-par. He is in danger of missing the cut.
