Play has been suspended at the 2012 U.S. Open, as rain is falling at Flushing Meadows, NY. Only a handful of matches have been completed for the day, while others featured suspended play. Play is expected to resume shortly.

The most notable match that completed Monday was on the women's side, where defending champion Samantha Stosur defeated Petra Martic, 6-1, 6-1, in the first round. Stosur advances to face the winner of Edina Gallovits-Hall and Stefanie Voegele in the second round.

Meanwhile, Cincinnati, OH native Nicole Gibbs has yet to take the court as she faces France's Alize Cornet. Later on at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Russia's Maria Sharapova squares off against Hungary's Melinda Czink.

On the men's side, England's Andy Murray is in action against Alex Bogomolov Jr. Currently, Murray leads the first set 2-1.

Starting at 7 p.m., No. 1-overall seed Roger Federer faces USA's Donald Young.
