Maria Sharapova had little trouble in her first-round match, advancing with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Melinda Czink at the U.S. Open on Monday.
The third-ranked Sharapova had 24 winners to Czink's eight, along with five aces to Czink's one.
Elsewhere, No. 5 seed Petra Kvitova had a little more trouble, but earned a 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 win over Polona Hercog in her first-round match. The edge in winners was just 22-16 in favor of Kvitova, who also had one more unforced error than Hercog.
As for local ties, Cincinnati native Nicole Gibbs trails Alize Cornet 5-7, 3-3 in their first-round match.
On the men's side, third-ranked Andy Murray scored a 6-2, 6-4, 6-1 victory over American Alex Bogomolov Jr. Murray had a 46-24 edge in winners and 7-1 edge in aces.
