Victoria Azarenka, the top seed in the women's bracket, easily advanced to the third round of the 2012 U.S. Open Wednesday, defeating Kiresten Flipkens, 6-2, 6-2, in the second round in Flushing Meadows, NY. Azarenka will play China's Jie Zheng, who also won, 6-3, 6-1 over Magdalena Rybarikova, in the third round.
Currently, Azarenka and Zheng are one of four women to collect second-round victories on Day 3 of the single-elimination tournament. The other women competitors to advance are: Mallory Burdette, who beat Lucie Hradecka, 6-2, 6-4, and Nadia Petrova, who earned a straight-set victory (6-3, 6-1) over fellow Russian Simona Halep.
Later in the day, around 5 p.m. ET, Kim Clijsters will take on Laura Robson at Arther Ashe Stadium. At 7 p.m. ET, Maria Sharapova will face off against Lourdes Dominguez Lino.
Meanwhile, on the men's side: Igor Sijsling defeated Daniel Gimeno-Traver, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4, in a first-round contest, while tonight's primetime match-up is between Andy Murray and Ivan Dodig.
