Thursday's action at the U.S. Open includes second-round matches for Roger Federer, Venus and Serena Williams, and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The full schedule for Thursday is available on the U.S. Open official website. Television coverage begins on Tennis Channel at 10:30 a.m. ET, switching to ESPN2 at 1:00 p.m.
In the day's main event in the men's draw, top seed Roger Federer returns to action at 7:00 p.m. ET against the German Bjorn Phau. Federer quickly finished Donald Young in his opening match in straight sets, and is heavily favored over the unranked Phau.
Elsewhere, fifth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga faces Martin Klizan at approximately 1:00 Thursday afternoon. Tsonga was a quarterfinalist last year, but lost to Federer. He made the semifinals at Wimbledon this year, though, and is playing some of his finest tennis. Other players of note in action Thursday include No. 11 Nicolas Almagro (11:00 a.m.), No. 12 Marin CIlic (approx. 1:00 p.m.), No. 23 Mardy Fish (1:00) and unranked American James Blake facing No. 24 Marcel Granollers (5:00).
On the women's side, fourth-seeded Serena Williams faces Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in a second-round match at approximately 3:00 p.m. ET. The three-time champion easily took care of Coco Vandeweghe in her first-round match.
Serena's sister, Venus, will play an extremely difficult second-round match against No. 6 Angelique Kerber. Venus Williams had little trouble in her first-round match, but will be facing 2011 semifinalist Kerber in a match immediately following Federer-Phau. Second-ranked Agnieszka Radwanska will be playing Carla Suarez Navarro in an early-afternoon match.
