Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the No. 5 seed in the U.S. Open men's singles tennis championship in New York, suffered an upset loss Thursday, losing in four sets to 23-year-old Martin Klizan of Slovakia.
Klizan, who is unseeded and ranked No. 52 in the world, won 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 to advance to the third round in the tournament. More details of the match here.
Tsonga faltered in the third set as Klizan gained momentum and confidence. Klizan is playing in just his second U.S. Open and had never advanced past the first round.
His career record is 17-21 in professional matches. He had made the second round at the French Open and Wimbledon before bowing out.
Tsonga made it to the semifinals at the London Olympics. He won a silver medal in doubles for France at the Olympics and had not lost before the third round in a Grand Slam tournament since 2007.
