The 2012 U.S. Open continued with Day 5 on Friday and the tournament's top-seeded players have continued to cruise through the first few rounds of the draw. Among those that won early on Friday were each of the defending champions of singles play at the U.S. Open - neither of whom lost a single set.
Novak Djokovic, the reigning men's singles champion, quickly disposed of Rogerio Dutra Silva of Brazil, losing just five games along the way. His 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 win in the second round sets up a likely matchup against No. 31 Julien Benneteau.
On the women's side, No. 7 Sam Stosur of Australia had to endure a first set tiebreaker against Varvara Lepchenko, but then took over the match and closed it out with a 6-2 second-set win. The defending women's titlist, Stosur is on to a round four match against unseeded Laura Robson of Great Britain, who upset No. 9 Li Na on Friday.
