Early Sunday morning the Columbus Crew was rocked as 22-year old midfielder Kirk Urso was pronounced dead at a Columbus Hospital. A cause for Urso's death has not been determined, but according to reports Urso was taken from a Columbus bar early Sunday morning:
Police were called to a bar in the city at about 12:50 a.m., and Urso was taken from there to the hospital, The Columbus Dispatch reported. Police officials did not immediately return messages from The Associated Press seeking details on the circumstances.
Urso was a first round pick in the MLS supplemental draft after leading North Carolina to the NCAA championship last fall. He played in six games before an injury sidelined him in May. SB Nation's soccer page has more on Urso:
"The Columbus Crew has learned that midfielder Kirk Urso has passed away on Saturday night," the statement read. "While the circumstances of Urso's passing are still being determined, no further comments will be made at this time.
"The thoughts and prayers of the entire Columbus Crew and Hunt Sports Group are with the Urso family in this time of need. "
