For the first time since Charlie Frye won the award in Week 17 of the 2005 season, a member of the Cleveland Browns is the NFL Rookie of the Week, as Trent Richardson earned the honor for his performance in Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
While the Browns came up short, losing the game to their in-state, AFC North rivals, 34-27, Richardson accumulated 109 yards rushing on just 19 carries and also added 36 yards receiving on four receptions. He found the end zone twice with a rushing touchdown and receiving touchdown.
Richardson was one of five finalists for the award, but beat out punter Johnny Hekker of the St. Louis Rams, quarterback Andrew Luck of the Indianapolis Colts, quarterback Ryan Tannehill of the Miami Dolphins and quarterback Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks in a fan vote for the award.
Selected third overall in the 2012 NFL Draft, Richardson and Robert Griffin III, the second overall selection, are the two winners of the weekly award so far.
