The Kansas City Royals scored two runs in the first inning and never trailed as they beat the Cleveland Indians, 5-3, on Saturday.
Ubaldo Jimenez (9-17, 5.55 ERA) took the loss for Cleveland after giving up five earned runs in 4-1/3 innings. Jimenez gave up seven hits and three walks. He has now lost six straight decisions.
Cleveland trailed 2-0 until the fifth, when Cord Phelps hit a 2-run home run to tie the game, but Kansas City quickly re-took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Eric Hosmer, Brayan Pena and Irving Falu all drove in runs in the inning to put the Royals up, 5-2.
The Indians picked up their third run in the eighth when Carlos Santana scored on an error.
Will Smith (6-8, 4.88 ERA) picked up the win for Kansas City, giving up two runs in seven innings and striking out five.
