Cleveland Browns Fire Director Of Player Development Jerry Butler

According to a report on ProFootballTalk, the Cleveland Browns have surprisingly fired Jerry Butler, Director of Player Development.  While Butler is still listed on the Browns website, at least one player, cornerback Eric Wright,  has essentially confirmed the move via Twitter:

"We all understand that things change and business isnt always fair but the Browns fired one of the best guys in that building in Jerry Butler"

Butler has been with the Browns since the team returned in 1999, first as receivers coach, then, in 2001, he moved into the Director of Player Development.  Butler was a Pro Bowl receiver for the Buffalo Bills after being drafted with the fifth overall pick in 1979.  Butler played his college ball at Clemson.

According to Zac Jackson of FoxSportsOhio, the move is surprising given Butler's longevity with the team and the respect he has earned around the NFL.  As Director of Player Development, Butler oversaw programs for the rookies in addition to setting up educational opportunities for players year-round.
