A game full of errors ended with no hits for the Cleveland Indians who lost the rubber match of a 3-game series to the Anaheim Angels 3-1 at Progressive Field.
A series that epitomized the struggles the Indians are facing - no offense combined with shoddy defense - the Indians only run of the day came when leadoff hitter Ezequiel Carrera reached on an error in the 1st inning, stole second, went to 3rd on the groundout, then scored on a wild pitch. From there it was 22 straight Indians retired before Lonnie Chisenhall walked in the bottom of the 8th inning.
It was the first time the Indians had be no-hit since 1993 when Jim Abbott did it. Abbot, of course, had only on hand.
Lost in all the hoopla of the no-hitter was a wasted pitching performance by David Huff and an embarrassing defensive display by the Indians, highlighted by 5 errors.
The Indians maintained their 1-0 lead until the Angels tied it in the fifth when centerfielder Peter Bourjois tripled and was brought in by a Mike trout sac fly. It remained 1-1 until the sixth when Tori Hunter scored from third with 2 outs on a past ball by catcher Carlos Santana.
Santana also committed one of the five Indians errors, along with Lonnie Chisenhall, Asdrubal Cabrera, Austin Kearns and Matt LaPorta.
The story was Santana, however, who needed just 105 pitches to finish off the Indians. He struck out 10 and had just the one walk to improve to 6-8 on the season.
