The Cleveland Indians have acquired Russ Canzler from the Tampa Bay Rays for cash considerations, according to the Indians' official Twitter account.
The 25-year-old Canzler was named the International League MVP at AAA Durham in 2011. In 474 at-bats, he hit .314 with 40 doubles, 18 homers and 83 RBI in 131 games. He had a .401 on-base percentage and a .530 slugging percentage. He appeared in right field, left field, third base and first base.
Canzler logged three at-bats last season in the majors, included a pinch-hitting appearance in the must-win regular-season finale against the Yankees.
The 6-2, 220-pound Canzler was drafted in the 30th round of the 2004 amateur draft by the Chicago Cubs. He became a free agent after the 2010 season and signed with the Rays.
After a hot start last season the Indians finished 80-82, 15 games back of the Tigers in the AL Central and 11 out of the wildcard race.
