The Cleveland Indians made a pair of roster moves Wednesday afternoon, claiming Russ Canzler off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays while designated starting pitcher Jeanmar Gomez for assignment.
Canzler was designated for assignment by Cleveland last month and subsequently claimed by the Blue Jays. Toronto decided to place Canzler on waivers, however, and the Indians were awarded the 26-year-old on Wednesday.
Appearing in 130 games for AAA Columbus, Canzler hit .265/.328/.487 with 22 home runs. Canzler appeared in 26 games for the Indians, accumulated 93 at bats and hit .269/.299/.398 with three home runs. Canzler drew just 46 walks in 487 at bats in AAA, and drew just four at the Major League level.
Defensively, Canzler logged 86 innings at first base for the Indians and 56 in left field.
Gomez appeared in 20 games for the Indians in 2012, making 17 starts. Gomez went 5-8, with a 5.96 ERA and 1.42 WHIP, totaling 90 and 2/3 innings. Gomez struck out only 47 batters while walking 34 and surrendered 15 home runs.
