There's some interesting rumors going on around the internet regarding the Ohio State Buckeyes and, more specifcally, their head coaching position, previously filled by Jim Tressel. Even more specifically, the buzz has been around one candidate and one candidate only: Urban Meyer. There's been credible sources and not credible sources, and all of them seem pretty confused as to which one initially quotes another credible source. How about a timeline?
First, Mike Freeman had this tweet, where he said "Scout.com is reporting Urban Meyer has agreed to coach OSU for 7 years, $35 million. If true, whoa." Now, despite the "if true" qualifier, Freeman's Twitter would go on to implode upon itself as he vehemently claimed he did not report it. He didn't - and neither, apparently, did Scout.com.
Then, ElevenWarriors.com would go on with a series of tweets about a potential Meyer signing:
@elevenwarriors We are 99.7% sure Urban Meyer has agreed to a deal to become the next coach of Ohio State. Solid sources. Plural.
ElevenWarriors.com has been a reputable site for Ohio State fandom and the rumor carries a little more weight than an article from Scout.com that may not actually have existed in the first place. At this point, it's really unclear, but there was one more source, this one from CBS, who claimed that, while premature, there could me something there:
From @ixcuincle will urban meyer coach in the near future?
Yes, I'm convinced the temptation to get back into coaching is too great for Meyer. He was able to recharge his batteries for a year, spend some time with his family but knowing that one of the few jobs (Ohio State) that he sees as elite is open will drive him back to the sideline. I realize there have been some reports floated that it is a done deal. I'm told by a source those reports are premature, but look for him to be running the show in Columbus very soon.
With the nature of these rumors, Meyer's actual interest could be all over the place - from none at all to signed and drawing up a playbook. We'll have more on this story as the news comes out.
