UConn didn’t even barely need to bring a bench to defeat the Aztecs of San Diego State, but it was a close encounter as the Huskies hung on to move on to the Elite Eight with a final score of 74-67.
Kemba Walker led all scorers with 36 points, and Jeremy Lamb was 8-10 from the field and added 24.
The last three weeks have been absolutely magical for Jim Calhoun in the Huskies. After winning five games in a row to take the Big East Conference tournament, they have continued their hot streak into the big dance and now won eight straight games.
For the Aztecs, D.J. Gay led four players in double scoring figures with 16 points. Billy White, Malcolm Thomas, and Kawhi Leonard had 14, 13, and 12 points respectively, and the Aztecs’ season has now come to a close.
For UConn, only Walker and Lamb scored more than five points, and the only points off the bench came from Shabazz Napier, who made only one of his five shots all game.
The Madness will continue for the Huskies on Saturday as they await the winner of Duke and Arizona.
