Lamar and Vermont - a pair of 16 seeds in the Midwest regional - will take to the court on Wednesday night in the first of two "first four" games slated to be played in Datyon, Ohio, with a second round matchup against North Carolina at stake.
The Catamounts earned their fifth trip to the NCAA tournament by winning the America East tournament, defeating top-seeded Stony Brook 51-43 in Saturday's final. Vermont's most fabled NCAA tournament moment was a 2005 victory over Syracuse in overtime, led by guard TJ Sorrentine.
Lamar found its way into the tournament by ripping off six straight wins to close the season, which came on the heels of a post-game rant by head coach Pat Knight lambasting his seniors. Knight's remarks evidently were heard, as the Cardinals stormed through the Southland conference tournament to earn the school's sixth NCAA bid.
