On a day filled with upsets, Michigan State played like they did not want to be another giant felled by an upstart seeded near the bottom of the bracket. The No. 1 Spartans left little doubt, beating LIU-Brooklyn by a final score of 89-67.
Michigan State was particularly tough on the boards. They had 42 rebounds to just 19 for the Blackbirds.
The Spartans shot almost 59 percent from the floor. Leading the way was Draymond Green with a triple-double. He finished the game with 24 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Four other players finished in double digits for scoring.
The Spartans will play St. Louis University in the second round of the tournament, on Sunday.
