The Indians shot all of their bullets in the second inning today and then, having drawn within striking distance of the fast-starting Chicago White Sox, the Tribe went to sleep offensively, and Cleveland fell to 0-2 on the young season with an 8-3 loss this afternoon in downtown Cleveland.

Carlos Carrasco started and was roughed up for five runs in the first two innings, but then relaxed and carried the game to the seventh, while the Indians started posting goose-eggs on the scoreboard. Carrasco was relieved by Chad Durbin in the seventh and a two-run double from Carlos Quentin basically sealed the deal.

Rafael Perez pitched the ninth and, after walking two to start the inning, got a double-play ball and got out of the inning without any damage, but it was all for show by that point.

Edwin Jackson survived his own rocky start to get the win for Chicago, which poked seven hits in the first two innings, and ended up with eleven for the game. Sergio Santos worked an inning-and-a-third in a non-save situation to finish it for the Sox.

Travis Hafner belted his first homer of the year in the second to get the Indians on the scoreboard. Hafner ended up as the only Tribesman with more than one hit.

Jack Hannahan did drive in two in the second with a single, but that hit was the end of the scoring for Cleveland on this day.

The Indians will try to salvage one game of this three-game series tomorrow, with Justin Masterson opposing John Danks in a 1:05 start at Progressive Field.

A win is needed, and would be appreciated.

Carlos Carrasco got two outs in the seventh but couldn’t finish the inning. Chad Durbin relieved and immediately put a runner in scoring position with a four-pitch walk, and then surrendered a two-run double to Carlos Quentin, and the White Sox, with time waning for the Indians, has restored their five-run lead, moving ahead of the Tribe 8-3 at stretch-time.

Carrasco will end up giving up seven earned runs, but truly, after he settled in, he gave the Indians a chance. It may translate to a loss anyhow…

…but good job, Carlos, hanging in there until the late innings.

Carlos Carrasco settled down nicely after the first two innings, but a Juan Pierre hit with two outs in the sixth inning after Brent Morel got into scoring position with a stolen base has Chicago up on the Tribe 6-3 heading to the Cleveland half of the inning.

Carrasco, who surrendered seven hits in the opening two frames, has allowed six earned runs on nine hits through six, keeping the Indians in the game and giving them an opportunity.

Now to capitalize and put another rally together…time is running out, and only twelve more outs remain.

Apparently someone forgot to tell the Indians and the White Sox that this is baseball, and that baseball games are generally low-scoring compared to slow-pitch softball.

Travis Hafner homered leading off the second, Jack Hannahan later added a two-run single, and although Asdrubal Cabrera and Shin-Soo Choo were unable to deliver with two on, the Indians have still come back to make a game of it, cutting their deficit to 5-3 after two innings.

At this rate the final score today would be something along the lines of 23-14…probable? Nah, it can’t be. Possible? One would have to wonder.

Well, the Indians are seemingly determined to show whatever fans could not make it to the park yesterday what they missed.

Chicago added four runs in the second inning on five hits, with Gordon Beckham driving in two and Alexei Ramirez and Adam Dunn each driving in one, as the Indians find themselves looking at an early 5-0 hole.

Question: Can an Indians’ starter actually get through a couple of innings without giving up a crooked number? Answer: Apparently not.

The good news is that the White Sox, so far, are only half as good as they were yesterday. The bad news is, “half as good” translates into a 1-0 lead after a half-inning.

Two shallow singles, one from Gordon Beckham and the other from Adam Dunn, followed by a sacrifice fly from Paul Konerko, gave Chicago the early lead.

The operative word is “early”…let’s see if the Tribe can stay in range this time.

Over 40,000 turned up yesterday for the Indians’ opener in weather conditions that will be basically mirrored today. Seems as if there isn’t any reason to not have 40,000 again.

Of course I am being facetious. If this was 1996 there would be a sellout today. But this is not 1996.

Even so, bleacher seats for the rest of the season are only ten bucks. That’s not a bad deal for a really good seat. And Progressive Field is a beautiful facility.

If the team is not up to the standard set by the Indians of the mid- to late-nineties…don’t let that be your only reason for staying away. It is baseball season, and any game you might go to could see someone hit four home runs, or someone throw a no-hitter or a perfect game. Maybe there would be a triple play.

If something like that happened, wouldn’t you regret not having been there….

…when you had the chance to be?

A look at the posted lineups for this afternoon’s 1:05 game shows them to be almost identical to yesterday’s starters for both teams.

In fact, the White Sox’ will send the same players in exactly the same order against Carlos Carrasco:

1) Juan Pierre (L) LF
2) Gordon Beckham® 2B
3) Adam Dunn (L) DH
4) Paul Konerko® 1B
5) Alex Rios® CF
6) Carlos Quentin® RF
7) A.J. Pierzynski (L) C
8) Alexei Ramirez® SS
9) Brent Morel® 3B

The Indians have eight players batting in precisely the same order. The only change for either team is that the Tribe will have Travis Buck batting seventh instead of Austin Kearns against Edwin Jackson.

1) Michael Brantley (L) CF
2) Asdrubal Cabrera (S) SS
3) Shin-Soo Choo (L) RF
4) Carlos Santana (S) C
5) Travis Hafner (L) DH
6) Orlando Cabrera® 2B
7) Travis Buck (L) LF
8) Matt LaPorta® 1B
9) Jack Hannahan (L) 3B

Let us hope that the almost-identical lineups do not produce identical results — though if the Indians could put up ten runs again, you would have to like their chances.
