A game full of errors ended with no hits for the Cleveland Indians who lost the rubber match of a 3-game series to the Anaheim Angels 3-1 at Progressive Field.

A series that epitomized the struggles the Indians are facing - no offense combined with shoddy defense - the Indians only run of the day came when leadoff hitter Ezequiel Carrera reached on an error in the 1st inning, stole second, went to 3rd on the groundout, then scored on a wild pitch. From there it was 22 straight Indians retired before Lonnie Chisenhall walked in the bottom of the 8th inning.

It was the first time the Indians had be no-hit since 1993 when Jim Abbott did it. Abbot, of course, had only on hand.

Lost in all the hoopla of the no-hitter was a wasted pitching performance by David Huff and an embarrassing defensive display by the Indians, highlighted by 5 errors.

The Indians maintained their 1-0 lead until the Angels tied it in the fifth when centerfielder Peter Bourjois tripled and was brought in by a Mike trout sac fly. It remained 1-1 until the sixth when Tori Hunter scored from third with 2 outs on a past ball by catcher Carlos Santana.

Santana also committed one of the five Indians errors, along with Lonnie Chisenhall, Asdrubal Cabrera, Austin Kearns and Matt LaPorta.

The story was Santana, however, who needed just 105 pitches to finish off the Indians. He struck out 10 and had just the one walk to improve to 6-8 on the season.

When Ezequiel Carrera opened today’s game for the Tribe by reaching on an error, stole second, moved to third on a ground-out, and scored on a wild pitch, things looked good for the Indians.

That is, before Carrera became the only baserunner for Cleveland until Lonnie Chisenhall walked in the eighth.

The Angels’ Ervin Santana no-hit the Indians 3-1 this afternoon at Progressive Field, in a game in which the Tribe committed five errors and had a passed ball to score a Los Angeles run.

It was the first time that the Indians have been (officially) no-hit since Jim Abbott did it for the Yankees in September of 1993. Of course, we all remember the perfect game that wasn't last year, but this time, there was no chance for an umpire to decide things, as the last out of the game came on a fly ball to left-center off the bat of Michael Brantley.

Santana threw 105 pitches, and only Jason Kipnis came close to a hit, but was retired on a nice play by the Angels’ Howard Kendrick in the sixth.

Amazingly, only one of the five errors led to any runs, that coming in the ninth when Carlos Santana airmailed a throw into center field on an attempted steal, with Kendrick scoring immediately thereafter on a single from Peter Bourjos.

David Huff started for the Indians and deserved better (but how many pitchers for the Tribe have we been able to say that about since the end of May?).

Huff worked 5.2 innings and gave up two runs, only one of which was earned, but fell to 1-1 after allowing five hits, striking out four and walking none.

The Indians held their 1-0 lead until the fifth, when Bourjos tripled leading off and was brought in to tie the game on a sac fly from Mike Trout.

Los Angeles took the lead for good in the sixth. Torii Hunter doubled leading off and moved to third on a one-out single by Kendrick, but when Mark Trumbo fanned, Huff was almost out of the inning.

That was when Carlos Santana let a pitch get by for the go-ahead (and, the way the Indians played today, how appropriate) run.

Nothing much more needs to be said about this one, except to say this: there is a saying that it can’t get much worse than this, and that things can only get better, yes?

Well, today’s game would fit that bill.

Congratulations, Ervin Santana.

The Indians are off until Friday, when the Royals come to town — although some would say that they have been off since they loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the ninth last night.

I am not going to say that one game in July will make or break the Indians’ chances of winning the AL Central, or that a win today should get the Tigers shaking in their two-games-ahead-of-the-Tribe boots.

But man, after that tough loss on Tuesday night, a bounce-back win today would sure look sweet.

David Huff, after his scheduled start was washed out on Saturday against the White Sox, will make his second start of the season at 12:05 today against Ervin Santana and the Los Angeles Angels in the rubber-game of this three-game set.

Santana is only 5-8 but does have a good 3.69 ERA, and he will be looking to beat the Tribe for the first time in his career. In 10 previous starts against The Good Guys, Santana is 0-6 with a 4.98 ERA in 56 innings pitched.

In his appearance vs. Cleveland on April 13 Santana went seven and allowed three runs in a game won by the Angels 4-3.

Huff will also be looking for his first-ever win against today’s opponent. In two previous starts vs. Los Angeles, Huff is 0-2 with a high 7.30 ERA.

But maybe the new-and-improved Huff we saw in Minnesota in his only game this season will be on the mound again today.

In that 5-2 Indians win on July 18, Huff went seven scoreless innings against the Twins, allowing five hits and two walks and fanning five.

The Tribe is off tomorrow, before continuing their homestand on Friday vs. the Kansas City Royals.

With Detroit sending 11-game winner Max Scherzer against Chicago this afternoon, the Indians may well need a win to avoid falling three games behind the Tigers.

And as far as that goes, it would be nice if the Indians (who sit on 49 losses) could avoid losing their 50th game until sometime in August.

To accomplish that goal (and to show the heart of a contender by washing away the bitterness of a tough, tough loss)…a win today is a must.

Even if it is only July.

While the Cleveland Indians were losing a heartbreaker down at Progressive Field to the Anaheim Angels, the team's AAA affiliate in Columbus was celebrating quite an accomplishment of its own. Starter Justin Germano, who spent some time this season with the big league club, pitched a perfect game in a 3-0 win over Syracuse.
↵
Germano's Perfecto was the first in Columbus Clippers' history and the first one thrown in the International League since 2003. It was the 6th no-hitter in Clippers history as well.
↵
After getting the first two batters of the ninth inning to fly out, Germano finished off his masterpiece in style by striking out Corey Brown.
↵
Hermano improved to 1-2 on the season and needed just 95 pitches to mow down 27 Syracuse Chiefs in order. Germano struck out 7. After the game, the Clippers celebrated the achievement in true minor league style, giving Germano a beer-bath inside the locker room. Congratulations!
↵

The Indians had their second straight come-from-behind victory in the ninth inning all lined up tonight. In fact, they had the perfect situation: bases loaded, nobody out, down one run.

You know, where a sac fly would at least tie it, or a medium-deep single win it.

But then Matt LaPorta, who had provided the Indians with their only run up to that point with a homer in the seventh, bounced into a second-to home-to first double play. And then Jason Kipnis, with a chance to be a hero for the second night in a row, struck out.

Ballgame, and the Angels had a Houdini-like 2-1 win.

Josh Tomlin was good, very good, but fell to 11-5 with one mistake, a Mark Trumbo two-run double in the seventh that gave Los Angeles a 2-0 lead, although that advantage was cut in half in the bottom of the seventh by LaPorta’s (predictable) bases-empty blast.

Tomlin went eight innings and surrendered just four hits, walking one and fanning three, but it was not quite good enough on this night.

Jered Weaver went seven innings, allowing just the one run and five hits to move to 14-4 on the season, with a shaky 24th save going to Jordan Walden.

The Indians went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position, and that right there was the story of the game. Of course, the two most painful were the final two of the game, but really, how much can you expect Chipnis to do when your veterans cannot hit a medium-deep fly ball or a slow grounder to avoid a double play?

The Tribe had runners at first and third with one out in the third, but Michael Brantley popped out, and Asdrubal Cabrera grounded out, to end the threat.

In the fourth, Cleveland had runners at first and second with only one out. But LaPorta flied out, and Kipnis fanned to defuse that opportunity.

With the loss, the Indians fall to 52-49 on the season. At the time of this writing, Detroit and Chicago are tied at 4-4 in the sixth. If the Tigers win, the Tribe will once again fall two games behind in the AL Central.

This series will conclude on Wednesday afternoon at 12:05 with Ervin Santana going for the Angels against the Indians’ David Huff.

Josh Tomlin still sports an 11-4 record, but has been showing some signs of perhaps breaking down as of late. Tomlin will need to be at his best on Tuesday when he faces American League All-Star Game starter Jered Weaver and the Los Angeles Angels in the middle game of this three-game set that concludes tomorrow at 12:05.

Weaver (13-4, 1.81 ERA) has not given up more than two earned runs in a game since June 8, and is riding a seven-game winning streak. However, the Tribe was able to beat him on May 7 in Anaheim when they touched him for four runs in six innings in a 4-3 Cleveland win.

For his career, Weaver is 4-2 in 11 starts vs. the Indians, with an ERA of 3.64 in 64.1 innings.

Tomlin has not lost since June 12, but in his last two starts, a victory over Baltimore and a no-decision against the Twins, Josh has given up nine runs in 11 innings, and it was only good offense from the Tribe in those games that kept him off the negative side of the ledger. But Tomlin’s ERA has crept up to 4.12, and against Weaver, he will need a superlative effort to keep the Indians in the game.

This will be Tomlin’s first appearance against the Angels this year. In two career starts vs. Los Angeles, Tomlin is 1-0 with a 4.26 ERA in 12.2 innings of work.

With a win tonight and another Chicago win over Detroit, the Tribe would once again find itself in first place. So much as they have driven the Indians batty this year, for tonight and tomorrow, it is fair to say: Go White Sox.

Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) – Jason Kipnis’ first major league hit came at a perfect time. With two down and the bases loaded in the ninth inning, Kipnis came through with an RBI single to cap a two-run frame and hand the Cleveland Indians a 3-2 win over the Angels.

Michael Brantley led off the inning with a single off Jordan Walden (2-3) and stole second to put the tying run in scoring position for Travis Hafner, who ripped a one-out RBI double to left-center knot the game.

Carlos Santana walked and Jack Hannahan was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

“Jordan’s been having a heck of a year for us. He’s had some inning where things don’t quite start off well with the first hitter or two, but he comes back and makes the pitches. Tonight I think he just wasn’t able to do that,” said Angels manager Mike Scioscia.

Hisanori Takahashi came in from the bullpen and retired Travis Buck on a force play grounder. Kipnis, who has spent most of this year at Triple-A Columbus, then lined a base hit to right field to snap Cleveland’s four-game skid.

“I was thinking I couldn’t do it during the regular at-bats so why not now. I might as well do it with all this on the line and fortunately it happened,” Kipnis said about his hit. “I couldn’t be happier right now. This is unreal.”

Asdrubal Cabrera slapped an RBI single, while Tony Sipp (5-2) tossed one scoreless inning in relief to earn the win in the opener of this three-game series.

Bobby Abreu clubbed a two run homer and Alberto Callaspo added a double for the Angels, who have gone 5-5 in their past 10 games.

Earlier, Cleveland grabbed the early lead in its first at-bat. With one out in the inning, Brantley slapped a double down the line in right and scored on the ensuing single by Cabrera.

The Angels threatened in the fourth when walks to Vernon Wells and Callaspo gave them men on first and second with one out. Indians starter Fausto Carmona battled back though, getting Erick Aybar to fly out to right and Mark Trumbo to ground into a fielder’s choice to end the inning.

Los Angeles threatened again in the fifth. This time, Jeff Mathis hit a one- out double and advanced to third on a Maicer Izturis groundout. Torii Hunter followed with a walk to give the Angels runners on the corners with two down for Abreu. The Angels were unable to cash in, however, as Abreu flew out to deep right to end the inning.

The Angels took the lead in the eighth. Izturis punched a one-out single to center and after Hunter flew out, Abreu cracked his fourth home run of the season deep into the right field seats off Vinnie Pestano.

*** Preview via SB Nation and Sports Network ***

(Sports Network) - Two of the American League's second-place teams, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Cleveland Indians, will have positioning in mind tonight when they open a three-game series at Progressive Field.

The Indians, perhaps baseball's most unlikely success story so far in 2011, have hit the skids of late, dropping four straight games to put themselves two games behind the first-place Detroit Tigers in the AL Central.

Meanwhile, in the AL West, the Angels are three games in back of the first- place and defending league champion Texas Rangers after winning two of three games in Baltimore.

On Sunday in Cleveland, the Chicago White Sox took advantage of shaky Indians defense to score three unearned runs and claim a 4-2 win in the finale of a rain-shortened series.

The White Sox are third in the Central, 2 1/2 games behind Cleveland.

Ezequiel Carrera made an error in the sixth inning and the White Sox plated another run in the seventh as a result of two Indians miscues.

Travis Hafner and Carrera came up with RBI singles for the Indians.

Justin Masterson (8-7) went seven innings in defeat, giving up four runs -- one earned -- on four hits while fanning six and walking one.

In Baltimore, Torii Hunter went 2-for-5 with a double, a home run and two RBI as the Angels downed the Orioles, 9-3, at Camden Yards.

Mike Trout added a three-run blast in the seventh -- the first of his career -- and Mark Trumbo had two RBI for Los Angeles, which picked up its fourth win in five games.

Tyler Chatwood (6-6) earned the win -- his first since beating the Dodgers June 25 -- after holding Baltimore to two runs on six hits over seven frames.

Perennial Cy Young Award prospect Dan Haren starts for the Angels and will try to regain the form that saw him with four straight starts between June 24 and July 10.

He's 0-1 in two outings since the streak ended, including a 5-3 loss at Oakland and a no-decision in the Angels' 9-8 win over Texas.

In those games, he's allowed 19 hits and 11 runs in 10 2/3 innings. In the four wins, he gave up just 19 hits and five runs in 31 innings.

Haren is 3-2 lifetime against Cleveland with a 3.90 earned run average.
